Mount Akhun - a unique miracle of nature

A very interesting and unusual sight of Sochi is the long mountain Ahun, which stretches along the Black Sea coast for five kilometers. Even its origins are related to several legends. One of them explains the name of this place by the fact that before people here were mainly engaged in cattle breeding and constantly turned to their patron god named Akhun. The other connects the name of the mountain with the ancient inhabitants of Abkhazians, in which Akhun or Ohun means "high dwelling" or "hill, mountain".

Mount Akhun (Sochi) attracts tourists and guests of the region for a long time with its healing springs and extraordinary nature. Here once stood a majestic Christian church, as evidenced by its ruins, located in these places and attracting the attention of history lovers. The Sochi Museum, which introduces visitors to the history of the birth and development of the city, contains a detail of the architecture of the temple with a very beautiful carvings. In the middle of the thirties of the XX century on the top of the mountain even an observation tower was built in the Romanesque medieval style and a road was laid to it. Moreover, from the tower's tower you can see the opposite shore of the Black Sea and the Turkish coast. You can get to the top of the mountain either by car along the highway or on foot through the Agur Gorge along the trail.

An amazing picture of the sunrise opens in the morning Mount Akhun to those who wish to see such beauty. Embedded in a mountain range of the river Agura and Khosta created around Akhuna picturesque valleys and separated it from the surrounding mountains. And the result of the cutting of the Paleogene sediments by the river Matsesta in this region is the formation of hydrogen sulfide therapeutic springs, which contributed to the popularity of the resort city of Sochi (the consequence was the emergence of a large number of sanatoriums and clinics).

Uniqueness and great variety is famous for the local vegetation, which depends on the sides of the world, and not on the sea level. Mount Ahun, whose photo amazes with its splendor, is very interesting located on the southeastern slope of the Khostinskaya yew-boxwood grove. Tis is a relict tree, which appeared more than a thousand years ago and is famous for its dark red very valuable wood. Many yews have a barrel about two meters in diameter.

The unique evergreen boxwood also belongs to the pre-glacial period and is appreciated by the dense and solid wood used for making souvenirs.

Mount Akhun is home to a lot of plants and animals, rare, endangered and listed in the Red Book.

To plunge into the pre-glacial period and gradually reach our days, it is necessary to go on foot to the top of such an attraction of Sochi as Mount Akhun. Here you can see both petrified sea urchins, Paleogene layers and Upper Cretaceous limestones, many secret caves and beautiful canyons. Look at the majestic rock of Prometheus, a very beautiful Agursky two-cascade waterfall and two smaller ones that can be seen mainly at that time of the year when it's still wet, go out to a fresh source to quench your thirst, get acquainted with many rare plants that you will not see anywhere else.

The mountain Ahun is unique and majestic in its nature. It does not only provide spiritual pleasure. There are also opportunities for fans of rock climbing. Nobody will remain indifferent, having visited such a miracle of the Earth.
