"Motel Bates". Actors of two prequels

Psycho Hitchcock spawned an endless series of sequels (in some the aging Perkins was removed) and remakes (including the color film project of Gus Van Sent almost perceptually reproducing the original). In 1987, the NBC television station broadcast the episode "Motel Bates" (actors: B. Court, L. Petty, M. Gunn, Henry Henry) - a prequel to the famous painting. It was presented as a pilot release of the television series about the events around the sinister motel and the identity of its manager. But the rating was horribly low, and it did not go any farther. But in 2013, the A & E channel announced the release of 10 episodes of the series "Motel Bates" (actors: V. Farmiga, F. Haimor, M. Tiriot, O. Cook, N. Carbonell) without any focus groups, pilots and other delays.

Telefilm 1987

Richard Rothstein, acting simultaneously in the hypostasis of the director and screenwriter, made a television movie "Motel Bates", which was positioned as a spin-off film "Psycho", not overlapping with his three existing sequels. The tape was shot in the original scenery of the first picture. The film "Motel Bates" (the actors and roles of which were selected each other by producers George Linder and Ken Tolopsky) was initially positioned as a pilot to the long series, which, as already said, was not removed as a result. The main character - Norman Bates, appeared at the beginning of the film for quite a while. The role of this character was played by Kurt Paul, known as an alternate of Anthony Perkins in the films "Psycho 2" and "Psycho 3". Perkins, without explaining the reasons, flatly refused to take part in this project.

The plot by Richard Rotstein

After the events covered by the movie "Psycho", the main character Norman Bates was sent to a psychiatric hospital. There he meets a child patient, Alex West, who killed his rapist-stepfather. Norman is imbued with fatherly feelings for Alex, becoming a second father for the boy. Twenty-seven years later, Norman dies, leaving West with his home and an ill-fated motel. Trying to realize the opportunity, Alex (Bad Court), along with a young girl Willie (Laurie Patty) decides to do business and open a motel. But in the still empty building, he begins to see the silhouette of Norma Bates. It's unclear whether this is a real woman or her ghost, but this essence is persistently trying to drive West out of Bates's house and not let the guy re-open the motel. Actors of the movie "Motel Bates", familiar with the script, were inspired and prophesied the project of Richard Rotstein not one season and high ratings. But the reaction of the viewer was unpredictable and the predictions of the crew were not allowed to come true.

Dramatic narrative about the childhood and youth of Norman Bates

Restarting the series "Motel Bates" actors who took part in the shooting, called a dramatic thriller about childhood, adolescence and adolescence of the protagonist Hitchcock Norman Bates and his uneasy relationship with his mother Norma. All previous work on the motives of "Psycho" failed to achieve success in developing the character of the main character. The reason for this, perhaps, was that Hitchcock alone explored the fine line of insanity and fear. All other authors just tried to repeat the commercial success of the blockbuster, but only achieved what was driven like an Anthony Perkins horse. His promising and promising acting talent remained unresolved, and Perkins remained a hostage to one role. Later, the actor played either in the sequels of the original film, or in low-budget horror films. The 1987 film was completely removed from the franchise, instead of Bates, a young character acted. To this project after a quarter of a century decided to return, so in 2013 appeared the first of five seasons of the TV series "Motel Bates". The actors involved in the work already had world fame and impressive filmography.

Acting Casting

Young Norman Bates in the series played Freddie Highmore, known to the audience as the performer of the role of Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Tim Burton. He managed not to copy the grasshopper-like lightness of Anthony Perkins, but periodically make references to it. In the role of his mother, whom Hitchcock showed mummified in his offspring, the actress Vera Farmiga was nominated for an Oscar. She brilliantly managed to get used to the role of an imperious woman, in every way poisoning the life of her teenage son. The actress is known to the audience on the Scorsese film "The Departed". The role of Dylan, elder brother and elder son Norma, played Max Tiriot. The guardian of the dark secret, the assistant to the sheriff Zach Shelby, was portrayed on the screen by Michael Vogel, known for his roles in "Pan American" and "Miami Hospital." Nester Carbonell, familiar to the viewer on the role of Richard Alpert from Lost, had to play a suspicious and attentive sheriff Romero. Actors of the series "Motel Bates" received mostly positive assessments of their skills from both film critics and ordinary people.

Triumphal shift

Why the action of the series was postponed in our days, no one knows except the authors. This quite bold and elegant cinematic focus, the shift caused the greatest number of heated disputes and conflicting reviews. In the film industry already had a similar experience, this feint threw Robert Altman in the film adaptation of Chandler's "Long Farewell." The creators of the TV series "Motel Bates" repeat this device, embodying the atmosphere of timelessness, arguing that even if the calendar dates have changed, then the motel and around it nothing has changed.
