The agent "Betadin" has a bactericidal effect due to the release of a (gradual) active component after first contact with the skin or mucous membranes. Iodine interacts with oxidized groups of amino acids that are contained in structural enzymes and proteins of microbes. As a result, microorganisms are inactivated or destroyed.

The action of the drug "Betadine" is noted after the first fifteen to thirty seconds of use. Absolute death of most of the microbial cells is observed in less than sixty seconds. Interaction with cells leads to loss of color of the drug "Betadine", which can serve as an indicator of its effect. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (the polymer that is part of the drug) eliminates the irritant effect of the drug, which allows patients to tolerate the medication quite well.

In clinical practice, to date, there is no resistance (including secondary resistance) to iodine, even with prolonged use.
