Luminescent lamp: operating principle and application features

The luminescent lamp acts as a gas-discharge light source, in which the apparent brightness is mainly created with the help of a phosphor, which is activated by ultraviolet radiation of the discharge. Light output from the product is several times greater than that of simple incandescent lamps at similar power rates.

In addition, the fluorescent lamp has a longer service life, which can exceed the period of the usual device by twenty times. This is possible with a high-quality power supply, compliance with the limitations on the number of turns on and off the device.

Luminescent lamps can be bought in almost any store that sells lighting devices. Mercury discharge devices of low and high pressure were most widely used . The latter type is mainly used for the arrangement of street lighting, as well as in high-power lighting installations. Low pressure devices are usually used in industrial and residential areas.

A fluorescent lamp is widely used to create lighting in public buildings: schools, hospitals, offices, etc. With the advent of compact devices that have electronic ballast, which allows the insertion of lamps into ordinary cartridges, fluorescent products are becoming popular in everyday life.

The demand for devices is determined by their characteristics. They primarily have high light output (a 20W fluorescent lamp shines like an ordinary 100Watt), a long working life (from 2000 to 20 thousand hours versus 1000 for a conventional incandescent lamp), as well as diffuse light and a wide variety of shades.

Appliances should be used to create general lighting in rooms with a large area. It is most effective to use products together with Dali systems, which allow to increase lighting conditions, while energy consumption is reduced by more than half, and the duration of the devices increases.

Fluorescent lamp is also widely used in workplaces, in light advertising, to improve the appearance of facades of buildings, etc. Devices find their place in the backlit LCD screens and LCD TVs. A variety of products are plasma panels.

Luminescent instruments have characteristic features associated with the principle of operation. When the lamp is turned on, an arc low-temperature electric discharge runs through the electrodes between two electrodes located at different ends of the device. The lamp is filled with an inert gas and mercury vapor, which allows to cause UV radiation, which is not visible to a person. In the light it is converted with the help of the luminescence effect.

For more stable operation of the devices, special ballast electronic devices (ЭПРА) for fluorescent lamps are used. They provide reliable functioning of the fixtures, excluding humming and flashing, while the power consumption decreases by a quarter.
