Labuh - who is this? Lexical meaning and theory of the origin of words

As in all languages of the world, there are jargon in Russian or, as they are fashionable to call today, slang. Despite their active use in speech, linguistic scientists do not hurry to make these terms in dictionaries, considering such names as "second-class words". In this case, terms of this kind are still part of the language, and very important. Let's consider one of these slang nouns - "Labuh". What does this mean? Where does the word come from in Russian, and what has features?

Definition of the word "Labouch"

This noun is called in the common people of musicians. However, it is not for amateurs to perform masterly the works of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, but those who play in restaurants for money.

It should be noted that "Labuh" is a word that has a negative connotation. Usually they are called musicians who are ready for the sake of money to play various low-quality music to please the tipsy restaurants visitors. Such people are also called "tavern musicians".

In addition to all of the above, labuhami also called performers of music at a funeral and also relate to their profession with a share of skepticism.

Some scientists believe that the root of the negative attitude towards the tavern musicians lies in their envy of them. It's no secret that when playing in restaurants where a wealthy audience gathers, sometimes you can earn more in the evening than an average musician performing classical music plays in a month.

In addition, many Labuha are self-taught, who are not educated and play by ear. Some of them do not even know the music. In this regard, the quality of their game is not always really good - hence the habit of considering them second-rate musicians. However, for the sake of justice it is worth noting that many tavern nuggets are real virtuosos, although the drunken audience does not expect much skill from them.

What does it mean to "fuck" and "lobane"

Having dealt with what "labouch" means, it is worth paying attention to the words "to caress" and "lobanin" close to it in structure and meaning.

If an ordinary musician plays or performs a piece of music, then he does not play laby, he fights. Two of these same root words are related to each other. Scientists believe that one of them was formed from the second. However, it is not known exactly which term originated in speech first.

There is one more word that is related to the Labuha - it's a "lobana". This is the name of the game of a tavern musician. At the same time, for an incomprehensible reason, the root of the term is not written "a" (as in "labu" and "labat"), but "o". However, since it is not stressed, it sounds like [a] - [laban'ina].

Labus Dictionary

Although among the professionals to the tavern performers are treated with a degree of neglect, the people of this profession for many years formed a whole vocabulary of specific professional terms.

For example, a clarinet is a bitch, a flute is a draft, a pipe is a toadstool, a piano is a plywood, a bayan is a shank, etc. It is worth noting that in the Labus dictionary many jargons are very similar to expressions, Peculiar to the language of bandits. This is not a coincidence. The fact is that regulars of restaurants at the time when the word "labuh" appeared (it is believed that this happened in the 20-30s of the XX century) were mostly criminals. Often communicating with them on duty, the tavern musicians adopted some of their words, making them "their own".

Also in the jargon of the labuchs there are many terms borrowed from the English language. For example: "haier" - long hair (from hair), "shoes" - shoes (from shoes), "girl's" - a girl (from a girl).

Who used to be called labyushi

The modern meaning of the word "Labuh" is slightly different from what it was originally. So, at one time this noun was not called all restaurant performers, but only those who played jazz.

Also there is an opinion that originally this word was only called string band musicians, although this version has no proof yet.

Who is called the "ancient Labuha"

This unusual phrase is not very common in modern oral speech. But it is often enough to be found in questions to crossword puzzles or scandvors. Their authors, under the phrase "antique labuha", refer to wandering lyricists, singers and kobza-players who begged on the roads of Ukraine and Belarus in the past centuries.

Gypsy theory of the origin of the word "Labuh"

Since linguists are not very fond of the word under consideration, nobody has ever really studied the etymology of his etymology. In connection with this, today there is no serious and reliable theory of the origin of the word "labuh".

Official linguistics is considered to be that the noun "Labuha" and the verb "Labat" originated in Odessa during the NEP period. However, there is no reliable evidence supporting this version.

The Russian linguist Shapoval V. V. puts forward his own theory of the appearance in the language of jargon "labuh" and "lobat." So, he believes that both terms are derived from the Gypsy verb "gabanit" (sing). This name was gradually transformed into the term "gilabanit". Over time, according to Shapoval, Russian-speaking listeners adapted this word to a convenient for them - "Labanit", and then "to lobat."

Also, the linguist believes that the gypsy word "money" - "love" or "labe" could have influenced the formation of the slang name of the tavern musician. After all, she plays for an order for money, hence the noun that calls his profession.

The situation with the noun considered in this article is typical for many words of the modern Russian language. So, linguists in all ages have taken the liberty to filter (as they believe) speech from weeds in the form of jargon. However, sometimes the terms, which they rejected, began to refer to the literary norm. But due to ignoring the history of the appearance of such names, it became almost impossible to establish, as in the case of "Labuh." It remains to be hoped that the linguists of the future will be impartial about neologisms and jargon. After all, every word in a certain period of history belonged to one of these two categories.
