Juniperus Cossack

Juniperus Cossack grows in the mountains of Asia Minor and the Caucasus. This creeping shrub reaches 1.2-1.6 m in height, it grows rapidly and forms dense thickets. Much less often the juniper Cossack is found in the form of small trees with a curved trunk up to 4 m in height. The bark on the trunk is exfoliated, red-brown in color. A characteristic feature of this juniper is the appearance of a sharp odor when triturating shoots and needles. The cones are small, brownish-black with a bluish bloom. Shoots of the Cossack juniper contain essential oils, which are poisonous.

Juniperus Cossack is photophilous, drought-resistant and wintery. The shrub is resistant to smoke, undemanding to the soil and has soil-protective properties. Adult specimens grow in width due to the fact that the branches lying on the surface of the soil take root and form dense thickets. Juniperus Cossack variegata is widely used for decoration of stony slopes and slides, in group and single plantings on the fringes and lawns.

Shrub should be planted in sunny places, because in shading the juniper grows loose and loses its decorative qualities.

The plant is stable, unpretentious in cultivation. The main problem is the defeat of fungal diseases. It is recommended in dry summer to water 3-4 times per season and weekly spraying in the evening. Juniper looks very decorative in the form of small groups or single plantings among the stones and in the park landscape. Particularly elegant is a shrub against the background of snow. Juniper is well combined with pine trees, roses, wild perennial plants and ornamental cereals.

Juniperus tamariscifolia has a height of 1 m and a width of 2 m. The shrub is distinguished by an original evergreen ornamental crown. On the outstretched ascending branches, needle-like needles predominate, having a bluish shade. This form of juniper is photophilous, drought-resistant and winter-hardy. The plant is undemanding to the composition of the soil, when grown in culture it lives to 35 years.

The juniper berries are poisonous, so it should not be planted in places,
Accessible to children. Tamariscifolia reproduces by layers and cuttings.
It is recommended to use this cultivar for gardening of gullies, slopes, stony gardens. Using juniper, you can create wide borders around the site or near roads. Very impressive looks juniper in manicured mowed lawns.

Juniper Cossack Variegata grows slower than non-root forms. This cultivar has sprouted shoots with curved tops and needles of a white-motley color.
