The best carrot seeds. Variety choice

For many peoples of the world for thousands of years, carrots are an indispensable vegetable in the diet. Virtually on any site where vegetables are grown, one of the first places is taken by this root crop. Any gardener knows: in order to get a high yield, able to be stored until the very spring, it is necessary to use the best carrot seeds.

Which seeds to choose

Preparing for planting carrots, it is quite difficult to navigate, especially the beginner, among the huge variety of seeds offered on the market - various manufacturers, beautiful names, enticing packaging. It is best to choose varieties that are regionalized, which are time-tested and adapted to local climatic conditions. Seeds of carrots may not yield the expected result . The best grades, the photos of which are shown on the packaging, do not look very attractive at all.

Do not rely solely on one kind of seed of any manufacturer. It should be borne in mind that different varieties have a different maturation period. In order to have a fresh carrot on the table early in the summer, early carrot varieties are used for planting. The middle-ripened will yield a crop closer to the autumn. And if carrots need to be stocked for the whole winter, then it is worth buying seeds of late varieties. Thus, the best carrot seeds are those that mature at the right time.

Early-maturing varieties

Begin to mature in June. The period of vegetation is from 65 to 90 days.

  • Carrot "Nantes-4". Very juicy fruit is distinguished by a cylindrical shape with a blunt end. Their length is small - up to 15 cm.
  • "Polar cranberry". It is considered one of the most early-ripening varieties. The color of the fruit is pink-orange. Carrots have an increased sugar content.
  • "Callisto." Long fruit can reach 20 cm or more. Pretty tasty carrots with high yield.
  • "Tushon". Bright orange fruits have a cylindrical shape and very delicate, juicy pulp.

Medium-ripening varieties

Fruit usually in July-August. The most popular varieties among gardeners are those that have already been tested for years.

  • "The Red Giant". Root length reaches 24 cm, the pulp is juicy and sweet. Vegetation period is 90-100 days.
  • "Losinoostrovskaya". Is very popular in dietary nutrition. Fruit with a juicy heart and sweet taste.
  • "Vitamin-6" and "Shantane-2461" combine remarkable taste qualities with a high level of keeping quality. Good both for making freshly squeezed juices, and for soups.

Late-ripening varieties

In order to be able to enjoy carrots throughout the winter, the best carrot seeds for planting are late-ripening varieties.

"Queen of Autumn" is especially loved by truck farmers. It has a high yield and is very well kept. Roots are quite large, with juicy and tender flesh. "Yellowstone" is distinguished by a yellow coloration of the fruit and not quite an ordinary shape resembling a spindle. The variety "Perfection" gives a stable yield of small roots, having a conical shape.

This is not a complete list. There are still quite a few different varieties that are in demand. Experienced gardener very carefully select for planting carrot seeds. Which varieties are better suited for planting, is determined by the climatic conditions of a particular region, and by the characteristics of the soil.

How to get carrot seeds

To obtain seeds in autumn, the largest and even root crops are selected, which are laid for wintering in a box of sand and stored in a damp cellar. At the end of May, when the bird cherry bloom is over, the tip of the carrot is cut about one third and the cut site is treated with wood ash. This is done in order to prevent root rot. Then the roots are planted in harvested wells filled with humus. After the shoots appear, only 3 or 4 of the strongest are left, with the largest umbrellas, the rest are removed. From the central shoot, the best carrot seeds are harvested. For storage for the winter they must be prepared according to all the rules.

When the inflorescence begins to turn yellow, it is removed and wrapped in a rag, suspended in a dry and shady place, so that the seeds are ripe. Ripe seeds have a light brown color. They need to be sorted, leaving the largest ones, and put into paper bags.

Carrot seeds in granules

For a long time, granular seeds are not uncommon. The quick-dissolving coat, which they cover, protects the seed from drying, and after sowing provides nutrients. In addition, the coating contains growth stimulants and drugs that protect seedlings from certain diseases. Seeds in granules require especially good watering, so that it would be easier to penetrate the seed through the shell. Good soil moisture should be maintained in the future. Due to the large size of the dragoons, it is much easier to plant them than ordinary small seeds.

Which seeds of carrots are best planted - ordinary or in granules, depends on the timing of planting. Granular seeds usually come out a week later than usual. Therefore, if the landing time is missed, then it is better to use simple seeds. In order to accelerate the germination, it is recommended to cover the sown patch with a film.

The tinted seeds also have good reviews. They are easy to plant; Bright color makes each seed very noticeable, which significantly speeds up the planting process. They are much faster sprouting than granular and much more attractive at a price. To find out which are the best carrot seeds, it is worth consulting with experienced truck farmers living in your area.
