Installation of GUR with UAZ-469

Recently, almost every manufacturer equips its cars with power steering. It can be both hydraulic and electrical. The latter type is actively used in the domestic "Kalinas" of the first and second generations. The cars of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, namely the Patriot, use a classic power amplifier with a hydraulic drive. But many are asking: why not install GUR on UAZ of other models? Indeed, there are many machines that still do not have this option. This is the "Loaf" and the 469th UAZ, popularly called "Goat". In today's article, we'll look at how to do it yourself.

Characteristic

At the moment, almost all budget machines are equipped with such an amplifier. However, owners of old cars have a desire to retrofit the car with a GUR. This is a very useful option. Even with a large diameter of the steering wheel, the forces applied to the control of the machine will be several times less. This is especially noticeable when parking in densely populated cities. The GUR itself is part of the steering system of the car and operates on the hydraulic fluid that the pump pumps. Also included here is the steering column. The usual factory does not fit here. There are many advantages of this system. The first is the comfort of management, because you no longer need to spin the "steering wheel" as much as before. The second is reliability. The hydraulic amplifier practically does not fail. The third advantage is the ease of maintenance. When you operate such a car you will not have any difficulties. Even if the amplifier breaks, you can repair it with your own hands. And to reach with such a breakdown to the garage is quite possible. The only thing that will be will worsen the ease of management. The steering wheel will become "heavy". By the way, for the first time such an amplifier was installed on Gorky's "Seagull". GAZ-13 was the first car with the GUR.

Minuses of revision

Among the shortcomings of the installation of the GUR on the UAZ-469 with their own hands it is worth noting the poor informative character of the rudder at a speed of more than 60 kilometers per hour. If without an amplifier it becomes tougher, then with the GUR it as easily turns, as well as at 10 km / h. On the other hand, UAZ is not a car for racing. Therefore, if the budget allows, such completion is quite acceptable. What do we need to buy?

To do this, we need to purchase a steering column for the amplifier, as well as a pump. The latter will create and maintain the necessary pressure in the control system. The work of the element is carried out by a drive belt. We also need a fluid reservoir and connecting hoses. The latter are divided into two types - low and high pressure. The first will drive the "return" to the tank, and the second serves to circulate the fluid in the system itself. As for the amount of fluid that is involved in the system, it is not too much. For UAZ, 1.2 liters of special oil is enough. It differs from the motor in viscosity and consistency.

How to install?

To do this, you need to remove the steering wheel. Here you need not just a set of keys, but a puller. Just so the steering wheel can not be dismantled. This puller looks like this: With bare hands dismantle the wheel will be impossible - so you just damage the steering column. After dismantling the steering wheel, the column must also be removed. The cardan joint and the nut securing the bipod of the steering rod are removed. Then unscrew the three nuts of the steering element. After that, a new set of bipods is installed on the shaft of the column with the GUR. The latter must be connected to the steering rod and secured using cotter pins. When installing a new column "under the GUR" we will be hampered by the old fastening. It is cut with the help of a Bulgarian. Next, install a plastic protective casing on the column. Screws for fastening fit old. Then on the casing wear a rubber ring, a crown nut and washer. The penultimate penis is attached with the help of ladders. Between the steering gear and the column is installed a small propeller shaft, which will connect the two elements and reliably transmit the force. A wedge is hammered into a wide hole (with a hammer, with light strikes). On the thread wedge mount two washers - spring and conventional. As a result, the length to the hinge should be 300 millimeters. Then twist the crown nut and mount the steering wheel. The steering column of the GUR (UAZ-469 - tuning object) has been successfully installed. But that is not all. We need to fix the rest of the mechanism.

Pump and tank installation

Any hydraulic amplifier is powered by a fluid pressure. To create it, there is a pump. But it works through the belt drive - from the crankshaft pulley. It is worth noting that there are different belts - under the GUR on UAZ and for cars without it. We need a longer element - under the hydraulic power steering. So, we remove the drive belt, the fan impeller and the crankshaft pulley. Next, unscrew the water pump. We attach the impeller to the wheel hub. Also we will need elongated bolts "under the GUR" on the UAZ and spacer (usually comes complete). A belt is installed on the new crankshaft pulley. Also, the fuel filter bracket is removed. This will put the pump. The bracket that comes with the GUR is mounted in place of the pins of the pump. Further on the brackets fasten the pump. The bracket and the bracket are attached to the lock nut. When installing the belt, you must set the correct tension. Adjustment of the GUR (UAZ "Simbir" can also be upgraded) is performed by tensioning a special roller. How to determine the normal stretch? The belt should not hang on the pulleys. If you press it with your finger, it bends 10-15 millimeters, while rotating at a right angle to the plane of the pulley. After we installed the Gur strap on the UAZ, install the fuel filter back. It is attached to a square hole. Next we take a drill in hand and drill several holes in the place of the left mudguard of the motor. They are needed for attaching the tank to the liquid. Here we will need bolts, nuts and yokes. This element is connected to the pump using a polymer hose. The system works on conventional gear oil. Once again we check the correctness of the installation of parts and start the car.

Checking

On the warmed-in engine, turn the steering wheel from side to side. In the first seconds of the tank should leave excess air. If it began to foam, then the system is leaking and you need to look for a breakdown. After carefully sealing all the hoses, start the motor and check the operation of the amplifier again. GUR, UAZ "Bukhanka" from foreign cars installed, should operate smoothly and silently. The belt does not whistle, there is no running fluid. You will immediately feel the operation of this amplifier. The steering wheel turns much easier than before. When operating, regularly monitor the remaining liquid in the plastic reservoir. It must be topped up if necessary. The operation of the hydraulic amplifier with insufficient liquid level threatens to break the pump. The steering wheel will become much heavier.

Problems of operation

Often, car owners purchase ready-made sets of amplifiers from the Ulyanovsk plant. Their cost is relatively small, and in the installation they are not problematic. Ready-made kits can be purchased at a price of 20 to 37 thousand rubles. But with frequent operation, especially without the proper level of oil, the amplifier starts to hum. This means that the pump or drive belt has been damaged. Less often breaks the steering rack itself (it can flow in places of compaction). It is not recommended to ride with such a breakage.

GUR from "BMW"

Often the question is raised about how to install a GUR (UAZ) from a foreign car, namely the BMW of the seventh series. It would seem that these are two completely different cars. But the German GUR is working quite adequately on the Ulyanovsk "Kozlik". To do this you will need a pump for 130 or more bars and a flat pulley. The latter can be milled from the turner on request. This is necessary to align the pulley crankshaft and pump. Some establish a two-cell element from the 24th "Volga". Hoses for the tank are suitable without rework. In the rest, the installation is no different.
