Install Wine in Ubuntu and other Linux systems

Despite the abundance of application programs for Linux, which cover almost all the needs of the average user, sometimes you may need to install the Windows application. How to be in this case? Installing a virtual machine or installing Windows as a second system?

No, such costly and inconvenient methods can be avoided. Will help you install Wine, which is a kind of interpreter for the Windows API under Linux systems. This means that it is theoretically possible to launch even gluttonous applications without their strong slowdown. In theory…

So, let's start the installation. Run the terminal from the root user. Since we are talking about Ubuntu, you need to drive the command "sudo -i" into the terminal, and when the system asks for your password (which you created when installing the system), you will also need to enter it. After outputting the terminal to user mode, enter the command "sudo apt-get install wine1.X ttf-symbol-replacement-wine1.X" (where instead of X we substitute the number of the current version or the version you need). So, for today the Wine Ubuntu installation will go after the command of this kind: "sudo apt-get install wine1.5 ttf-symbol-replacement-wine1.5".

However, it is possible to act easier. The fact is that there is an "Application Center" in Ubuntu. Going into it, you just need to write "Wine" in the search string, and then install the application found by the system. But such a Wine installation is fraught with the fact that you will not have the latest and up-to-date version installed, but what was fresh at the time of the system's release. So it's best to do it manually using the above method.

However, there are some subtleties here. The fact is that Wine alone will not be enough when installing many of the Windows applications. You must additionally put Winetricks, which is installed after the command "wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks".

Unfortunately, the panacea is not even Wine. Installing programs with it often does not solve all problems. Do not expect that this way you will make work some rare and specific application that works only under a certain version of Windows. Before installing any game or program, you need to read the rating, which you will be available after installing Vine. There are three types of programs: platinum, gold and silver. Sorted so they are easy to run. So, platinum programs and games can be installed and launched with stunning ease, without any difference in this plan from the native applications of Windows.

Accordingly, gold and silver programs need additional tuning. Its complexity can be different: in some cases you will only have to install several files from the Windows libraries, while in others you can not do without solving the "puzzles". However, not only Wine installation can help you play your favorite game under Ubuntu.

Recently started the project Valve with their Steam under Ubuntu. A native client will launch a large number of excellent games without resorting to other tricks. However, the difficulty lies in the fact that so far not all games and programs have been ported to the Linux platform. So installing Wine in some cases remains the last way to get the application you need to work under Ubuntu.
