How to give birth to a cat

Owners of mustachioed and striped creatures, as a rule, themselves have to take delivery from their pets. The exception is unless the child with complications, when the animal is required to be delivered to a vet clinic. And if there is a pregnant cat in the house, the owners have a lot of questions, in particular, how to give birth to cats, how to help the animal, when it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Do not panic, usually animals do their best themselves, you only need to provide comfortable conditions and stay close to support the mother and help in case of need. But you still need to prepare.

Pregnancy in cats continues, usually 60-71 days. At least a week before the birth, you need to prepare a house for the future mother. A large cardboard box, for example, from under the TV, will do. Its bottom should be laid with a clean cloth, folded in several layers, you can put a newspaper under the cloth. One of the walls of the box should be lower than the others, so that later the mother cat could leave the "nest", but high enough that the young could not climb through it.

Find a suitable place for the box, it should not stand on the aisle, it's better if it's the corner of the room. For a week or two before delivery, your pet should begin to settle in his house.

Shortly before birth, an animal may have an increased appetite, and activity, on the contrary, decreases. Just before they give birth, cats begin to behave restlessly. A mother can rush about the room, rake her litter, scratch the floor, while the animal can tremble and pant. Try to calm the future mother by persuasion and caress. If it happens that she does not want to settle in her house, do not force her, this can not be done. Just put the litter in the place that she chooses. Later you can transfer the born kittens to a prepared box.

Further, as a rule, the second stage of the process begins. Just now you will need knowledge on how to give birth to cats, at least, be ready to help. The laborer begins contractions, at which time the cervix is opened, water flows out. You should not be afraid of her behavior, if the cat gives birth for the first time, it can howl, take an unnatural position. About the beginning of attempts you can easily recognize by the noticeable tension of the abdominal wall.

The kitten appears in a bag full of liquid. The cat instinctively breaks the shell with teeth, gnaws the umbilical cord and immediately begins to lick the baby. This stimulates his breathing. But if the bubble has not burst, and the cat's mom has not torn it, you need to gently poke it in the area of the kitten's spout and remove it. Cut the umbilical cord with scissors (sterile).

If the baby does not give signs of life, finger clean the mouth of mucus, intensively (but gently) rub the kitten with a towel, shake (like a thermometer) and put it to your mother. During this procedure, kittens can squeak, but this is just a good sign. If breathing does not appear, massage the back of the baby's head, continue these measures with small interruptions until the newborn does not whine.

If suddenly the kitten is stuck, that is, it appeared only halfway, grasp the body with a clean handkerchief, wait for the effort and slightly pull, swinging from side to side. But remember, you can not pull the paws. If a head appears and the body is stuck, pull the baby by the scruff. Wipe the newborn with a towel and put it to your mother.

Owners often ask how many kittens are given birth to a cat. There is no unambiguous answer, much depends on the breed, on what kind of birth. Purebred cats for the first time usually produce 3-5 kittens, but there are rare exceptions, when up to 9 babies are born. As soon as you notice that your pet has started again, put the first kitten in the box and get ready to take the next one.

It may happen that during the birth or afterwards the veterinarian will need help. You should be ready to take the cat to the clinic if necessary. First and foremost, a doctor's consultation is necessary, if the attempts are unsuccessful for more than half an hour, it happens if the cub is too large. If after the birth the animal rushes and worries for more than half an hour, also consult a veterinarian.

Now, when you theoretically know how to give birth to cats, in practice mastering the role of an obstetrician will be much easier.
