How to enter the "BIOS" and make the necessary settings

Sometimes, in order to optimize the computer for one purpose or another, you need to know how to enter the "BIOS" and make any actions on the menu. In this article we will consider what this program is, why it is needed and how to use it.

What is "BIOS"?

On the motherboard of any computer or laptop there is a special microcircuit with a program written on it, the main function of which is to turn on the device. This is "BIOS". That is, they call the microcircuit itself, and the program built into it. With the latter, you can perform all the necessary system settings before the start of Windows or another OS.

Both the program itself and its menu are quite simple. However, in our time, some difficulties (completely solvable) can arise with how to enter the "BIOS", and with what actions to produce further, even for rather sophisticated users of laptops and PCs. The fact is that the settings can vary significantly between different manufacturers.

What are the functions of "BIOS"

In a laptop or computer, this program is not only responsible for inclusion, but also performs a number of important actions, such as:

  • Initial testing of devices after power-up.
  • Transfer control to the program on the boot disk in case of correct operation of the hardware.
  • Storage of PC hardware configuration.
  • Allowing the user to manually specify the computer's operating modes.
  • Processing of I / O actions.

In some circumstances, modern operating systems can access the "hardware" bypassing "BIOS". This happens, for example, when the sleep or standby mode is turned on / off . However, if any of the settings are disabled in the BIOS, it will remain inaccessible to the OS. In this case, the user himself will have to make the necessary actions. Therefore, further consider how to enter the "BIOS" in this or that case. This can actually come in handy at any time.

How to get to the menu on a desktop computer

Entering the BIOS on the PC is somewhat easier than on a laptop. In order to display the menu of this program on the monitor, it is necessary to press a certain key (usually Del) immediately after switching on. The difficulty is that you need to do this very quickly. In the event that the user misses the right moment, the computer will need to be restarted again. In order to find out which key to press, it is necessary to look at the left corner of the screen at the bottom (most often). There, usually for a few seconds, appears: Press DEL to enter Setup, or similar. In this case, the system prompts the user to press Del.

How to make settings?

Very often the question of how to enter the BIOS is related to the need to select a boot device. This is necessary, for example, when reinstalling the OS. The new Windows is booted from the disk in the drive. After a successful installation, the system for running the OS should already be accessing the HDD. The settings in the BIOS must be changed manually. You can do this by going to the menu item, which for different versions of the program is called differently, but usually starts with the word Boot. You will not be able to do anything by moving the mouse. To navigate through the menu items you will have to use the arrows on the keyboard, and to enter them press the Enter key.

After completing the action described above, a submenu opens in which you will need to click First Boot Device. Next, the program will prompt you to choose the device from which the OS will boot. For example, for hard drives and hard disk is the item Hard Disk. Clicking on this inscription, you will fall into one more submenu. In the item Hard Disk ... and you need to choose between a USB flash drive and HDD. The priority device is moved to the top line (by means of the "+" or "-" keys).

How to configure BIOS on a laptop correctly?

On laptops, the standard Del key is rarely used to enter the menu. Usually this is one of the options for functional F or some combination. As for the actual settings, they are produced in approximately the same way as on stationary PCs. In the case of a laptop, the hardest thing for an inexperienced user is to get into the BIOS itself.

Varieties of the BIOS program

On modern devices, basically, two versions of this program are used. The first is the Phoenix Award BIOS CMOS - when you log in, the user provides a screen with two columns and brief tips at the bottom. The second - AMI BIOS - is most often found in laptops. Special work with it does not represent. There are other varieties used only on portable devices.

So, the matter is not as complex as it might seem at first glance - BIOS setup. The guidance given above, of course, is far from complete. However, in this program with the initial knowledge of the English language it is quite possible to understand and independently. Moreover, there are not so many menus, submenus and items in it. You can even understand the BIOS without even being familiar with English. To understand what keys to press for navigation, it is not difficult and experimentally.
