Guram Gugenishvili: tragically extinguished sports star

Many people live rather short, but at the same time bright enough life, leaving behind a worthy heritage. This article will refer to a man who was destined to live only 28 years, but during this time he managed to achieve a lot and fit himself into the history of mixed martial arts. The name of this athlete is Guram Gugenishvili.

Birth and the beginning of a sports career

The future bright representative of the world of MMA was born on July 23, 1986. The birthplace of the fighter was the capital of Georgia - Tbilisi.

At the age of seventeen, Guram Gugenishvili began his career in free-style wrestling and began to train under the watchful eye of his coach Gia Galdava (this man now holds the post of deputy head of the Department of Youth and Sports in the government of Georgia). Later, the young man went under the wing of another famous Georgian athlete, Luka Kurtanidze, who in turn is a two-time winner of the Olympics and a multiple world and European champion. For three years, Guram Gugenishvili managed to become the champion of his country and get the title of master of sports in freestyle wrestling. However, a series of serious injuries forced the guy to forget about sports in general and wrestling career in particular.

Going to MMA

Forced break in the sports career forced the young Georgian guy to look for himself in other areas of martial arts. In many respects due to this he managed to become the winner of the world championship in universal fights and get into the prize-winners of the world tournament in combat sambo. In mixed fights, the fighter came in 2007.

In 2009, Guram Gugenishvili conducts a series of successful battles, which he won at the M-1 Global promotion tournaments held at that time in Ukraine. Each athlete competed convincingly.

Conquering the title

The soldier Guram Gugenishvili, whose biography, unfortunately, interrupted a few years ago on the ground of death, in October 2010, was given the right to compete in the title fight for the championship belt, which was first played then in the promotion of the M-1 Challenge in heavyweight. The second contender for the title and, accordingly, the opponent of the Georgian, was the American Kenny Garner, who won a similar selection in the US.

The first round of their battle took place in a fairly equal fight: Kenny beat, and Guram walked to his feet. However, already in the second five-minute session, Gugenishvili held a successful reception - he managed to grab the American's neck and literally strangle him, as Garner lost consciousness. Thus, the champion's belt was in the hands of the Georgian, and he fully confirmed his role of the so-called strangler, because he won the vast majority of his fights just like that.

Title Protection

In the spring of 2011, Guram successfully defended his belt from the claims of the Russian Maxim Grishin. And just like in the battle with Garner, the challenger was strangled. The second defense of the Georgian was postponed due to injury. For the time of Guram's absence, Garner became the champion, who was able to defeat Grishin all the same.

In June 2012, Guram again came face to face with an American for the title of undisputed champion and lost a technical knockout after the fight was stopped by a doctor. At the end of the year, the rivals met again in the ring and again Garner celebrated the victory, sending Gugenishvili to a knockout with a series of punches.

Death

Guram Gugenishvili, whose cause of death is a car accident while on a hunt in the Gori municipality, was an educated man and graduated in 2007 from the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Law at the Tbilisi State University.
