The drug "Metronidazole" (form of release - gel) is an antiprotozoal antibacterial agent with the same active ingredient. It is prescribed by specialists with urogenital trichomoniasis (vaginitis, urethritis) and nonspecific vaginitis, confirmed by microbiological and clinical data.

The preparation is produced in aluminum tubes in cardboard packs together with a special applicator for intravaginal administration.

Metronidazole (gel): instructions for use

The drug is administered intravaginally, and as a rule, the standard dose is 5 g (this is the amount of gel calculated for the applicator applied to it). The course of treatment is five days after taking the drug twice a day.

The gel "Metronidazole" causes an individual intolerance to ethanol, so you need to be extremely cautious. In addition, the drug should not be taken with the "Disulfiram" product, and also if you took the drug within the previous two weeks. Simultaneous intake of these drugs may cause some neurological symptoms.

If we are talking about interaction with other drugs, it should be noted that the gel "Metronidazole" is able to enhance the effect of anticoagulants. The drug should not be combined with muscle relaxants and phenobarbital.

In cases of overdose (they are very rare) or if the drug is intolerant, the following side effects may occur: skin rash, urticaria, irritation or burning in the partner's penis, frequent urination, itching, pain, hyperemia of the mucosa in the external genital area. The candidiasis of the vagina may develop after the drug is discontinued. You also need to be prepared for some systemic reactions - changes in taste (including the taste of "metal"), dizziness, headache, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, loss or loss of appetite, spasmodic pain in the abdomen, constipation or diarrhea, leukopenia and Other.

So, the drug is contraindicated in patients with leukopenia, patients with impaired coordination of movements, with organic lesions of the central nervous system, liver failure, as well as pregnant women with the first trimester of pregnancy and nursing mothers. In the second and third trimester of pregnancy is appointed with extreme caution. The drug is not prescribed for people with increased sensitivity to individual components of the drug and to derivatives of nitromidazole.

From pharmacies, the gel "Metronidazole" is released only by prescription. It is stored in a dry dark place away from children at a temperature of up to 25 degrees Celsius. Shelf life - two years.
