"Cold Mountain" is a film in which the generous blood and hate shown by the authors are only sinister scenery of the history of the overwhelming sense of the simple American carpenter Inman (Jude Law) and the not so simple daughter of pastor Ada Monroe (Nicole Kidman). Their love, flaring up after a brief acquaintance, a couple of words and an awkward kiss in parting, stretched out for a long period of separation.

Historical and epic melodrama

The Englishman Anthony Minghella ("The English patient", "The Talented Mr. Ripley") in the first part of the picture extremely powerfully demonstrated all the horror of the battle scenes and the role of punitive detachments of southerners. But after the battle they go to the background, giving way to the lyric line, which softens the hearts of the audience, not allowing the viewer to fall into excessive sentimentality.

As a result, the murderous simplicity of the conflict laid by Mingelloy at the base of the tape is bought only by the fathomless blue eyes of Nicole Kidman and the beautiful handsome Jude Lowe who got used to the image of the enamored deserter.

The main roles in the film were performed by stars of the first magnitude, actors known to the world cinema community. "Cold Mountain", having a significant rating - IMDb: 7.20, was once nominated for an Oscar in seven categories.

Oscar-winning Kidman

The Australian and American actress was originally positioned by the creators as the performer of the main female role of the brainchild of Anthony Minghella. In addition to her, nobody even considered the role of Ada. For Nicole Kidman, "Cold Mountain" was the third film in which she managed to withdraw in a year.

"Cold Mountain" could replenish the filmography of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Josh Hartnett - all the listed performers were auditioned for the role of Inman. However, Anthony Minghella personally invited Judah Law, whose success in the big cinema came after participating in the project of the talented "Mr. Ripley" (for performing the second role, the actor was awarded the BAFTA award).

So he got the role of Inman Jude Law. "Cold Mountain", by the way, also brought him the nominations for "Golden Globe" and "Oscar", and "Sherlock Holmes" - for the "Saturn" award. According to leading cinematographers, in 2003 Anthony Minghella made the right choice, stopping at Lowe's candidacy. In general, "Cold Mountain" turned out to be a worthy film. Although for the particularly hardened snobs the author's interpretation of US history has become unacceptable. Anthony Minghella's attempt to eclipse the canonical melodrama "Gone with the Wind" though failed, but definitely can be considered an outrageous experience, worthy of either blame or admiration.
