Travels, Tips for tourists
Everest's dizzying height
It's hard to imagine that the words "Jomolungma", "Everest", "Peak XV", "Sagarmatha" are the names of the same mountain, the highest point on the planet. To date, the height of Everest is 8848 meters, and this is far from the final figure - according to scientists, the peak increases by an additional 5 mm per year.
The height of Mount Everest. Description of the object and general information
One of the names - "Jomolungma" - translated from Tibetan sounds very beautiful "Mother of the Wind" or, according to some other data, "Mother of the life force of the earth." Nepalese are used to refer to it as "Sagarmatha", which means "Mother of Gods".
More familiar to us, the name "Everest" in 1856 was offered by the Englishman Andrew Vaugh, who at that time was the successor to D. Everest, the head of the geodetic department in British India. Prior to this, in Europe, the mountain was called "Peak XV".
It is noteworthy that from the Nepalese side it is hardly possible to immediately see Mount Everest - it is blocked from the outside world by the mountains of Nuptse and Lhotse, whose height is no less impressive and is 7879 m and 8516 m respectively.
The most courageous and hardy adventurers climb the peak of Cala Pattar or Gokio Ri to admire the summit of the world and take breathtaking shots.
The height of Mount Everest. History of ascents
Everest is considered difficult for climbing: the peak has a pyramidal shape with a steeper slope on the south side. At an altitude of 5 thousand meters glaciers end, and on the steep slopes of the mountain, snow does not stop at all.
The mountain was first conquered in late May 1953. The team consisted of thirty people who used oxygen cylinders - climbing Everest without them is impossible. Almost 30 years later Soviet climbers climbed the southeastern wall. Particularly distinguished Ukrainian athletes M.Turkevich and S.Bershov - they made the first ever night ascent.
To date, according to the latest statistics, Everest has already been visited by about 3000 climbers from all over the world. Unfortunately, about 200 athletes did not let the mountain go - they died: someone on the ascent, someone on descent from lack of oxygen, frostbite or heart failure, some broke or fell under the avalanche.
This proves once again that on such routes, as a rule, decisive role is played not by expensive and modern equipment, but by concomitant luck, which can save the traveler from falls and hurricanes that destroy everything in their path.
The height of Mount Everest. How realistic is it to be in the vicinity of the great mountain?
Everest is a height for those who want to conquer the irresistible. But, as they say, in this world there is nothing impossible, the main thing - to want. For many years the giant has been struck by its grandeur, impressive threatening and attracts millions of adventurers. Although not all go to the very top. Why do they come to Everest? Photos taken at the foot or in the foothills, and the atmosphere itself is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. In addition, international gatherings are held here annually, base camps are established and evenings of acquaintances are arranged.
Those who absolutely want to see the earth from the highest point of the planet, it is necessary to hire a guide or get into the special group. However, I would like to immediately warn that pleasure is not cheap - the cost of climbing will cost $ 45-60 thousand dollars.
