We can say that Dubrovnik (Croatia) - the largest port of the Adriatic, which plays a significant role in the economy of the country, and the entire region. It should also be mentioned that this city occupies a key place in the development of the culture of the people. It is worth recalling that due to the unique microclimate and fairy-tale nature, this is the most famous resort. But, perhaps, the best recommendation to Dubrovnik will be the fact that UNESCO included it, like Venice and Amsterdam, in the top three most interesting architectural ensembles that grew out of the water.

And everything began in the distant VII century, when near the shore on a small rocky island Dubrovnik was founded. Croatia in those days suffered from raids by the Normans and other nomads, and people were simply looking for an impregnable place to protect themselves. For five centuries, the inhabitants became cramped within the old city, and in the 12th century an embankment was created, thanks to which the island turned into a peninsula. On this dam and is now the main street - Stradun. From it begins the pedestrian zone, which covers the entire ancient center.

In the Middle Ages, Dubrovnik - whether Croatia owned it, Venice or it was an independent city-republic - has always flourished. A convenient port and active trade brought considerable profits to the townspeople. Here palaces, churches, fountains were built, for the erection of which famous artists and artists from different countries were invited. The splendor and splendor of Dubrovnik opens to the guest already at the beginning of Stradun Street: there is a fountain of Great Onufriev (Maly Onufriev is on the opposite end of the mound). On the western tip of the island stands the City Bell Tower, and on the east - the Bell Tower of the Clarissa Convent.

The modern view of Dubrovnik (Croatia) acquired in the XVII century, when the earthquake in 1667 turned most of the houses into ruins. After a natural disaster, the magistrate passed a law according to which new buildings were built. So now the city is a single architectural ensemble with countless arcades. A lot of restaurants offer you to sit among the flowers, rest and snack, but the tourist has no time: to see all the sights of a tiny island, not enough for a few days.

Acquaintance with the city should start from the old port. From here depart tourist boats to Plate, Cavtat and other interesting places, which Croatia is so famous for. Dubrovnik - reviews do not cease to assert this - is an amazing pearl of the country. There is the oldest synagogue in Europe, the most well-preserved city fortifications (it is absolutely necessary to walk through them to survey the city from above), the oldest functioning pharmacy. You also need to see the mole of the XV century, once faithfully defended the townspeople from pirates and storms, the Franciscan monastery, the church of St. Blasius and the cathedral, where the painting "Ascension" painted by Titian.

If you decide to visit the countries of the former Yugoslavia, then the best choice will undoubtedly be Croatia. Dubrovnik, whose hotels are designed for every taste and size of the purse, takes tourists all year round. Although the beach season lasts from May to October, the resort gives a lot of fascinating excursions, it constantly hosts festivals, and nightlife hits the key. Beaches near the Old Town are mostly pebble or platform, but there is also a sand and pebble Lapad Beach with a developed infrastructure and excellent opportunities for outdoor activities.
