Domains of countries, territories, thematic: which ones to choose?

Since the invention of domain names has passed for a quarter of a century. But so far people have not fully determined the issue of choosing a name for the site. It is still popular opinion that third-level domains are less attractive than the second. Some users do not understand that there are country domains and others. This article will tell you more about this.

What is a domain?

The domain name of the site consists of words that are separated by dots. Their number determines the level, which is denoted as: how many words in the domain, so is its level. The hierarchy goes from right to left. So, the very first stage is called a top-level domain.

As a rule, they can be divided into three main parts:

  1. The domain zone. It is in this part includes the domains of the countries of the world. It is not a property of the resource, but is intended for registration of names.
  2. Name of the site. This is already the property of the resource. Contains one word, in which the name of the company or site is most often concluded.
  3. A subdomain is an optional part that identifies a specific subsection of a site. An example is the subdomain www.

Classification of zones

The domain zone consists of one or two stages. In the first case, it completely coincides with the top-level domain. More than two steps are used extremely rarely.

Top-level participants can be formally divided into domains of countries, service and general purpose.

The latter include some domains that are allocated on a territorial, cultural or linguistic basis.

Country Domains

Are intended, as it becomes clear from the title, for certain countries, cultures and languages. When choosing a rule, you should take into account that such a zone should be chosen in case the site is targeted at residents of a particular country or carriers of the same language. For example, the .ru domain is chosen for Russian or Russian-speaking users.

Domains of countries of the world, the list of which has 242 identifiers, always consists of a pair of letters. Here are some examples:

  • Russia - .ru.
  • Ukraine - ua.
  • Czech Republic - cz.
  • Japan - jp.

General domains

Are allocated on certain territorial and cultural grounds. For example, there are separate domains for Asia, Catalonia, Berlin, New York, Latin America. Some of them make certain requirements for registration. For example, in Ukraine, you can register such a domain only if you have a trademark with the same name.

Thematic domains

These zones do not belong to the territory. They consist of more than a pair of letters. Each domain defines a certain sphere of activity. Such a zone should be selected if the resource is fully or mostly consistent with it. There are zones .net, .com, .gov. The latter is chosen for government organizations. There are separate domains for museums, travel agencies.

Choosing a domain zone

In order to make the right choice with regard to the domain zone, first of all you need to answer the following questions:

  1. Is the audience or scope of activity limited to the territory of a particular country?
  2. If there are restrictions on a certain region of this country?
  3. Is the resource oriented to a specific sphere?

After that, you can already make a decision based on the information described above. But it should be said that there is nothing reprehensible in the choice of the .info or .biz domain zone in cases where commercial activities are carried out. They never look dubious.

By the way, if you organize a personal site that will be used for a portfolio or personal blog, then you do not need to choose a country domain. For this purpose, there is a .name zone where you can register third-level domains containing the user name. An email address of the same type will be automatically received.
