Diarrhea in a dog with blood: what to do

Diarrhea - a fairly well-known and common disease in dogs. It is difficult to find a person who could not tell how the symptoms of this disease manifest themselves. Naturally, the very first thing that can be observed in a dog suffering from a digestive disorder is an increase in the bowel movement. Thus the feces have a liquid consistency. Sometimes feces can take a bright scarlet color or brownish-brown color. This indicates that a dog with blood began diarrhea.

But a loose stool, not all that can bother the pet. When diarrhea, depending on what it was caused, there may be the following symptoms:

  • Oppression of the general condition - the animal is sluggish, constantly lies, does not react to others, it has a sad look;

  • Poor appetite or lack of it;

  • temperature increase;

  • Dehydration of the body;

  • Sharp weight loss.

In fact, the worst thing that can happen to a dog during diarrhea is dehydration. Sometimes there comes a time when the process becomes irreversible and the pet dies. Therefore, the owner should carefully treat such a painful condition of the dog, and at the first deterioration to seek help in the veterinary clinic.

What can cause diarrhea in a dog with and without blood?

Diarrhea in dogs is a symptom of the underlying disease, so for the appointment of adequate treatment it is necessary to put the right diagnosis. So, diarrhea can be observed:

  • When fed with fatty or poor-quality fodder;

  • When poisoning;

  • At a dysbacteriosis;

  • With bowel disease of non-infectious nature (enteritis, trauma, etc.);

  • With liver and pancreas disease;

  • With helminthiases;

  • When viral (plague, viral enteritis, hepatitis, etc.) or bacterial (salmonellosis, staphylococcosis, etc.) infection.

Sometimes there can be diarrhea in a dog with blood, indicating either damage to the intestinal mucosa with sharp, swallowed objects, or the infectious nature of diarrhea.

Diagnostic Issues

In order to establish the cause of diarrhea, the veterinarian may need the following information:

  • When diarrhea began;

  • What the dog ate in the last few days;

  • Whether medicines were given to her;

  • Temperature indicators;

  • Whether dehelminthization was performed;

  • Whether vaccinations were put: if yes, what and when.

In addition to the usual examination, the veterinarian may offer to take test feces for the presence of helminths or their eggs, hidden bleeding. Not always diarrhea in a dog with blood can be determined visually. An important moment in the diagnosis is the urinalysis, a general blood test. Do not interfere and X-rays. They will make it possible to differentiate diarrhea from intestinal or peritonitis obstruction.

Dog diarrhea: what should I do or ask first-aid questions?

If the dog has diarrhea, self-medication is not recommended. In case of impossibility of emergency treatment in the veterinary clinic, the owner of the dog will benefit from some knowledge of first aid in case of digestive disorders.

The dog is put on a hungry one-two-day diet and provides complete peace. To fill the lost fluid inside give a salty broth of chamomile, ordinary boiled water or rehydron.

On the third day the dog can begin to feed easily digestible food - kefir, low-fat cottage cheese, forcemeat from lean beef.

All these rules are valid only for uncomplicated diarrhea caused by inaccuracies in the diet. In other cases, accompanied by a deterioration in the state of the animal, it is counter-indicative to delay the trip to the doctor.
