Bunin, "Dreams of Chang": a summary. "Dreams of Chang": ideological sense

To understand the peculiarities of the works of the Russian writer I. Bunin allows their brief content. "Dreams of Chang" is a story written by the author in 1916. It differs from many other works of the writer in that the narrative is conducted, as it were, on behalf of a dog that remembers its past. The whole story is in essence a motley picture of the dreams of this dog, from which the reader learns about his past life, and most importantly, gets an idea of what his master, formerly the captain of the ship, used to be.

Introduction

With a brief description of the housing environment of the heroes of the work begins its brief content. "Dreams of Chang" - a story written in an excellent literary language, which the author was so famous for. At the beginning of the book, he shows the wretched life that the dog and his master are leading. They live in a miserable little room with a low ceiling and cold walls. The former captain has a poor bed, whose appearance contrasts sharply with what the dog had seen before: a comfortable soft bed with boxes. The first dream of the dog relates to his childhood: he remembers how his first owner sold it to the captain literally for one penny. Then he recalls his first sea voyage, during which he felt very ill and therefore did not see the cities or land that the ship sailed past.

The Second Dream

A detailed description of the animal's memories includes a brief summary. "Dreams of Chang" is a work based on the principle of the contrast between the dreams of the dog and the miserable reality in which he now finds himself. The author draws attention to the fact that the captain sank heavily, drank a lot and gave drinks to his dog. Under the influence of alcohol, the dog again sees a beautiful dream: he enjoyed a magnificent morning off the coast of Arabia and listened to the conversations of his master, who told him about his love for his wife and daughter. This moment is very important for understanding subsequent events, because it is this episode that shows that the family was for the captain of the meaning of life and that his feelings were so strong that he himself was afraid of his affection. However, he felt happy, and with him the dog was happy too.

Weekdays of heroes

To understand the characters and destinies of the heroes of the story helps its brief content. "Dreams of Chang" - a story about the unhappy love of the captain and the life of his dog, who is surprisingly receptive to everything that happens to the master. The writer creates a sharp contrast between the dreams of the dog and the brutal life that she has to lead. Both go to pubs and taverns, they drink, looking at drunkards. At the same time, the captain is almost always silent, when meeting with friends he begins to say that the life of a person does not make any sense. This attitude to his destiny is explained by the dog's new dream: he sees the captain showing him pictures of his wife and daughter and at the same time tells him that his wife does not like him. And the reader understands that unhappy love has caused all that has happened.

Change in destiny

The real master of psychological analysis is Bunin. "Dreams of Chang" (the summary of the work is the subject of this review) is a story that conveys the events that take place through the psyche's mind and worldview. He led the usual everyday life with the captain, but once he found him dead. It was a terrible blow for the hero: he even lost his sense of reality and woke up only after a while at the church porch. Bunin knew how to transfer the experiences of an animal with an amazingly subtle way. "Dreams of Chang" (the summary of the story should include a description of the changes that occurred with the hero after the death of the former captain) - a deeply psychological work. The author emphasizes that the hero survived this loss as a living person. However, it was not abandoned, since it was taken by a friend of his second master, who was an artist. At the new owner the dog has found if not happiness, then at least peace.

The ideological meaning

To understand the meaning of the work in question, the short story "Dreams of Chang" helps. Bunin stressed the description of the state of his hero after the death of the captain: he described that the dog retained memories of his former master, and he remembered his strong, powerful and beautiful. The author paid special attention to the fact that Chang himself anticipates his death. Indicative is the fact that it happened in the apartment of the artist, in an atmosphere that had to philosophical reflections.

Thus, in his own very thin psychological work is the story "Dreams of Chang". Very brief content, in principle, reflects the main ideological meaning that the writer has invested in his work. It is a feeling of the temporality of life and the premonition of eternity. This idea clearly sounded in the final story, when Chang as if summed up his existence.
