Botanical Garden of Kiev: it. Fomin, on Pechersk, to them. Grishko

The visiting card of the capital of Ukraine is the famous Kiev chestnuts, and the magnificent Botanical Gardens. Where else but in this place can together come together so grandiose riot of colors of blossoming flowers, the magnificence of mighty centuries-old trees and a grandiose variety of shrubs? The most famous of the gardens are the arboretums. Grishko and him. Fomina.

Botanical Garden. MM Grishko

The Botanical Garden of Kiev in Pechersk has the most direct relation to the history of the emergence and development of the Academy of Sciences. The initiator of the creation of the Botanical Garden in the city was V.I. Lipsky - a famous scientist, florist and the first president of the Academy. He burned with a desire to build a garden in the territory belonging to the Holosiivskyi forest. This thought did not come true, as the famous scientist changed his place of residence. But the name of such a versatile personality has firmly entered the history of the amazing garden.

In 1935 on the Zverinets in the garden was allocated a land area of 117 hectares. Consultant on the arrangement of the botanical masterpiece was Lipsky. After the scientist passed away, his work was continued by VE Schmidt. He was also the director of the garden. The botanical garden in Pechersk (Kiev) was created slowly. Firstly, it was not sufficiently financed, and secondly, a rather large area of it belonged to private owners who left their usual place of residence with great reluctance.

Despite all the obstacles, before the Second World War, the garden could already boast 1,050 plant species and a thousand taxa of greenhouse crops. All this happened thanks to the new director Ya. K. Gotsik and MM Grishko, who at that time was the head of the Academy of Sciences.

Grishko in the history of the botanical garden

The Botanical Garden of Friendship of Peoples (Kiev) was badly defeated during military confrontations. Most of its plants have become unusable, and some have been irretrievably lost.

With the advent of the spring of 1944, the reserve was actively reconstructed, and in July it was placed under the direct management of MM Grishko. Botanical splendor was given the status of an independent division belonging to the Academy of Sciences.

Expeditions abroad began to collect various collections of plants. Grishko wanted to create a garden that would become a place for rest of citizens, and the center of science of Ukraine. For visitors, the Botanical Garden was opened on May 29, 1964. Today, this institution is a carefully guarded territory, which is part of the natural reserve fund of Ukraine.

"Population" of the Botanical Garden

The modern Botanical Garden of Kiev covers an area of 129.86 hectares. Here visitors can admire the uniqueness of the quantity and quality of collections and their compositions. These are medicinal, vegetable, fodder, flower-decorative, fruit, spicy-aromatic and technical plants. They were collected in all the world's botanical-geographical regions. In the garden there are more than ten thousand varieties, species and forms of plantings. In the garden, the largest collection of lime, walnut, oak, lilac, maple and fruit wild plants is collected in the whole of Eastern Europe. There is a unique collection of a molded dogwood.

All this is cherished by Kiev. Botanical Garden named after Grishko - this is a huge arboretum of 30 hectares, and a greenhouse complex, spread over 20 hectares. The arboretum includes 1062 species, forms and varieties of shrubs, lianas and trees. And the greenhouse pleases its visitors with a collection of 450 species and forms of tender orchids.

Botanical Garden of Fomin

One of the oldest botanical gardens in Ukraine is the Botanical Garden of Kiev named after Fomin. The official date of its creation is May 22, 1839. It was during this period that the first plantings of trees were made. Today, this garden is considered a subdivision of Kiev University. Shevchenko. Here it occupies 22 hectares of the square, which houses collections of more than ten thousand plant species, a botanical museum, a huge greenhouse complex, and a scientific library.

The garden is famous for its exotic exhibits. Here is a large collection of all kinds of cacti and succulents. Also striking is the grandiose collection of palms. In the former USSR, they were the largest and oldest.

How the garden of Fomin was created

Ancient Kiev legends say that a long time ago the territory of a modern garden belonged to the sister of Kia, Cheek and Horeb - Lybedi. One of the rivers that flow into the mighty Dnieper is called Lybid. And on its left bank, among the ravines and hills, a garden was created.

Beretti - the architect who designed the University of St. Vladimir (now TG Shevchenko) offered to break the garden in a deserted place near the school. In 1839, permission was received for the construction of a temporary garden. Only in 1941 he was honored to become permanent.

Botanical garden (Kiev) Fomina fell under the leadership of Alexander Vasilyevich in 1914. Fomin ran it until 1935. During the winter of 1919-1920, when the strongest frosts broke out, a considerable number of plants were saved by the director and his staff from freezing.

War and the post-war period

During the occupation of the Ukrainian capital by the fascists, some of the plants were taken out, some were killed by the villains, but in the shortest time Fomin Botanical Garden was restored. Since the spring of 1944, it opened its gates to visitors. In 1977, the garden was equipped with a 30-meter greenhouse-climatron, the total area of which is 1000 m 2 . In 1984, the construction of a domed greenhouse with an area of 532 m 2 and a height of 18 m was completed.

V. Sosyura, Lesya Ukrainka, M. Rylsky, M. Vrubel - all of them once visited the Botanical Garden (Kiev). The university probably can not boast of such visitors. Today, Fomin's garden is an unsurpassed green oasis, which is located in the center of the Ukrainian capital.

Fomin's Garden today

The Botanical Garden of Kyiv now plays the role of the research department of the Shevchenko State University. Here students practice botany. Schoolchildren and young naturalists can take part in special educational and scientific excursions that reveal the secrets of nature to them, tell about its significance in the life of each of us.

In 2007, complex restoration works were carried out here: slopes were strengthened, new breeds of bushes and trees were planted, greenhouses were modernized.
