Victor Vasnetsov was born in the family of a priest. The homeland of the artist was the Vyatka Krai, a place where at that time people remembered and honored ancient rituals and customs, folk legends. The boy's imagination was captured by the poetics of fairy tales, epics, songs. During his studies at the Academy of Arts (1868 -1875) Vasnetsov studied the history of his people with avid interest, the Russian heroic bylinas. One of the artist's first works was the painting "The Knight", which depicts a calm hero, guarding the border of the Russian land. With great enthusiasm, the young artist worked on illustrations for fairy tales: "Humpbacked Horse", "Firebird". The passion for the epic-fairy-tale genre made Viktor Vasnetsov a real star of Russian painting. His paintings - this is not just an image of Russian antiquity, but the reproduction of a powerful national spirit and sense of Russian history. The famous painting "Bogatyri" was created in the village of Abramtsevo near Moscow. This painting today is often called "Three heroes". Vasnetsov gave a short description of the picture in a short but capacious remark: "Bogatyr Dobrynya, Ilya and Alyosha Popovich at the heroic exit - they notice in the field whether there is an enemy or whether they offend anyone."

Widely spread hilly, overgrown with feather grass and in some places young fir-trees steppe. She herself, as acting characters, speaks of the strength and courage of Russian heroes. In a decisive attitude and sharp look, the artist emphasizes the remarkable character of the Dobryni snake-dog (it is he who wins the epics of Snake Gorynych). In his hands is a sword, which the hero does not rest with reckless dexterity, but with confident force. Looking at the hero, we are convinced that he will be able to skillfully use the weapon at the right time. To the right of his older comrades, Alyosha, the son of the Rostov priest, is sitting on his horse. He easily holds the bow in his hand and looks with cunning. In Alyosha Popoviche plays a young fervor, and it is felt that the boy with a passion will rush in the moment of danger to protect his friends and land.

Without the characteristics of the horses there will be no complete description of the picture. Three heroes Vasnetsova see friends and companions in their horses. The appearance of each animal is related to the qualities of the hero. Under Ilya - a thorough, stubborn and faithful crow. Proud and full of dignity is the white horse Dobryni.
