Basic functions of communication

How important is communication in our society? Some scientists would have answered that without it there would not be a society. Not so often we think about the role played by communication in our lives, communication with other people, acquaintances and strangers. If you take a certain group of people and exclude the communication component from their arsenal, then they are unlikely to be able to achieve any assigned task.

If this is the state of things, then the functions of communication are something really important, virtually indispensable in the form in which it is presented now. We like to argue about the importance of this or that science, always forgetting about the role played by language, linguistics, psychology and philosophy.

So, what communication functions can be distinguished? It should be noted that scientists have not agreed on a single classification, so there are different options for a set of functions.

Broad definition

It is better to start with a broad definition of the basic functions. In this case, it means that people in the community communicate with each other for different purposes. However, they are all fairly easily and successfully divided into several types and groups.

In the first case, we mean the specific norms of behavior adopted in society. These are the unspoken rules that everyone follows. Communication acts as a fairly powerful instrument of regulation, it is because of this that all members of society quickly adopt the basic norms of behavior. Thus, the function of communication includes regulating one's own behavior and the behavior of the surrounding people.

It is worth noting that it is thanks to this function that it is possible to create a single and integral society or separate groups of people able to solve problems and achieve certain goals.

Under the effect-communicative function is meant the emotional component of communication. People share not only information, but also emotions, without this it is difficult to imagine "live" communication. This explains the desire to use "emoticons" in Internet correspondence, because they help express the missing emotions.

Narrow aspects

Any function of communication psychology treats differently, because it itself consists of many aspects.

In a narrower sense, you can separate the different goals depending on their purpose. This is a fairly accurate and interesting classification. Some experts adhere to this theory.

  • Contact - communication for the sake of establishing contact with another person.
  • Incentive - communication in order to push the interlocutor to anything.
  • Information - communication for the exchange of information.
  • Coordination - communication for coordination of actions and coordination in work.
  • Emotional - communication with the purpose of conveying emotions and feelings.

Pedagogical communication

A special place is occupied by pedagogical communication, i.e. Communication between teacher and students. This type is somewhat out of the general classification, because it combines several other functions - coordination, information, motivation, contact, etc. The functions of pedagogical communication are much more complex and extensive than may seem at first glance.

In the process of growing up, the child goes through different stages of socialization and becoming a person. It is unlikely that this process can be full without communication. The structure includes a perceptual component - direct perception and learning with an appropriate assessment and personal comprehension of new information.

Do not underestimate the functions of communication in the modern world. On this, any relationship is built, and without this it will not be possible to achieve the set goals, move forward in order to master new knowledge and so on. This is a key moment in the development of society and a separate group of people.
