"Audi 80 B2": all the fun about a famous German car

"Audi 80 B2" is a medium-sized car that was produced in the 70-80s. Initially, the history of the model began in 1966. And ended in 1996. As a platform, the base, which belonged to Volkswagen-Passat, was first taken. This model has a rather interesting and rich history, so it's worth telling about it at least briefly.

About the model

Initially, I would like to tell you some basic information about this machine. "Audi 80 B2" was issued thirteen years - from 1975 to 1988-th. During this time, almost 1,700,000 copies were sold! Of these - only 170 thousand versions of the coupe. More popular were 2- and 4-door sedans.

In total, nine different versions were offered to potential buyers of that time. All of them were distinguished by one extremely important detail. And this, of course, is the engine. There was one 1.3-liter version, three - 1.6 liters (standard, turbodiesel and diesel). Also there were cars equipped with 1.8-, 1.9-, 2.0-, 2.1-, 2.2-liter motors.

The dimensions of the "Audi 80 B2" are as follows: length - 4383 mm, width - 1682 mm, height - 1365 mm. The wheelbase is 2540 mm, and the mass is a maximum of 1190 kg (a minimum of 930 kg, and the indicator depended on the configuration).

The end of the 70's

"Audi 80 B2" in 1978 received its own platform, its name was known as Tyoe 81. In Europe, the company continued to use the figure 80 as a brand, but in North America this car became known as the Audi 4000 (or with a prefix S). Above what the body should look like, Klaus Lüte originally worked. But then he went to BMW, so this question was taken up by Giorgetto Giugiaro. And he did it all quickly and successfully.

In most cases, buyers ordered 4-door sedans. But the models with two doors also enjoyed a certain popularity. The universal was decided not to produce, because then in this niche the Volkswagen Passat succeeded . Interestingly, in the United States, the basic equipment fully corresponded to the European car "Audi 80 CD". This machine had one very striking feature - it corresponded to the strictest standards relating to the content of harmful emissions in exhaust gases.

Eighties

The car "Audi 80 B2", a photo of which is presented above, was considered a standard performance. However, later, in 1984, it was decided to release another model. And it became known as "Audi 90". In fact, it was an absolute copy of its predecessor. The only thing that differed from the novelty of the "Audi 80 B" is the power unit, the volume of which was larger. Some options have also been added. So, for example, a potential buyer could choose a 5-cylinder I5-motor for 2.2 liters in volume (power was 115 and 136 hp). Later, by the way, the engine was increased to 2.3 liters. Another choice was provided by the turbodiesel I4. Its power was equal to 75 horsepower. The machine was offered with both front and rear drives.

Another novelty had the ABS system, and if the person wanted and had this opportunity (financial, of course), he was offered it, but at the rate of 3725 DM. Also, this car could boast of electric windows, a hatch on the lid, wipers on the headlights, air conditioning and even cruise control.

Platform Features

"Audi 80 B2", the scheme of which was developed by manufacturers for a long time, turned out to be a very promising machine. No wonder she became so popular. Its platform is a universal and profitable base. Its components were borrowed from "Audi-Coupe", "Quattro", "Sport-Quattro". And these cars, as many know, cemented the brand in the eyes of fans of Audi cars. The system of permanent all-wheel drive (the name of which is just Quattro) found its destination in different kinds of races. Also it is applied on this time.

By the way, one more interesting and practical moment concerning the car "Audi 80 B2". Repair is not a problem at all, if we talk about this model. Because, as already mentioned above, many details were taken from several other machines. So the search for "donors" does not take much time. And, by the way, repairs are also required infrequently. Here the main principle is a careful operation. "Audi" - a car assembled soundly, so that breakages are rare. Even today, in 2016, people sell B2-models, and in good condition. By the way, about the price. Today, this car can be bought for quite an acceptable amount. 100 thousand rubles - this is the amount for which a person can get a car with a good running, without gripes on the body and with a perfectly working engine.

Specifications

This topic is also worth mentioning. As already mentioned, there were several modifications. The most powerful version was considered a 115-horsepower engine (2.2 MT Quattro). It could accelerate to 193 km / h! A good indicator for the late 70's! Up to a hundred, it was accelerated slightly more than in 9 seconds, and the flow rate was 10 liters per 100 km.

There was also a model with a maximum of 184 km / h (the engine was also 115-strong, but smaller), the acceleration was 10 seconds, and the flow rate was 8.5 liters. The weakest was a car with a 60-horsepower engine. Maximum speed - 148 km / h, acceleration - 17 seconds to hundreds, and consumption - almost 9 liters. Still there were three versions for 75, 70 and 90 liters. from. - the so-called golden mean between the most powerful and weak models.

Interesting information

Sedans B2 could be purchased in Europe until the end of 1986. In the rest of the world, cars were sold until 1987. The version of the coupe, if I may say so, was delayed for another year. Until 1988 it could be purchased. But then the models were replaced.

By the way, in 1984 the specialists of the company decided to make some changes in the car. The tail lights changed (they allegedly became a copy of those that were installed on the "Audi 100"). The front and rear bumpers were transformed, the luggage cover, the torpedo and the steering wheel paddles became different . There was a new, modern (at that time) steering wheel. The headlights also began to look different - more expressive, you can say. Wiring specialists also improved, and the fuse block was decided to be transferred under the hood.

In 1983, the world was provided with a sports version of the model. It was built on the Audi 80 GTE. And it was a really good machine with impressive technical characteristics.
