There are different opinions as to the origin of the lexeme "artek". Some researchers believe that it goes back to the Greek words "άρκτος" (bear) or "oρτύκια" (quail). In Arab historical sources there is a mention of the country inhabited by the Rusans "Artania", located in the Black Sea Rus.

In the very center of children, the version about the "quail" origin of the name of the camp is popular. There is a song called "Artek - quail island". This stable expression has become firmly entrenched in the vocabulary of guests and employees of the children's camp.

History

The pioneer camp "Artek" in Crimea originally performed the function of a sanatorium for children suffering from tuberculosis. The initiative to create such an institution belonged to Zinovy Petrovich Solovyov, chairman of the Red Cross Society in Russia. For the first time the camp opened its doors for young guests in 1925, on June 16. In the first shift "Artek" was visited by 80 children from Crimea, Ivanovo-Voznesensk and Moscow. In 1926, there were foreign guests - pioneers from Germany.

Initially, the Artek people lived in tarpaulins. Two years later, plywood houses appeared in the camp. 30th years of the last century were marked for "Artek" by erection of the winter building in the upper park. In 1936, the pioneers-order bearers, decorated with government decorations, arrived in the camp, and in 1937 - guests from Spain.

During the difficult years of the Second World War the camp was evacuated to Stalingrad, and later to the city of Belokurikha in the Altai Territory. In 1944, after the liberation of the Crimea from the fascist occupation, Artek began to rebuild. In 1945, the territory of the camp increased to modern dimensions.
