AMD Sockets: Overview, Features and Processors

This article will discuss AMD sockets. At the moment, the company's model line has four processor connectors. Each of them is aimed at a certain part of the computer systems market. It is about them that will be discussed later.

List of Processor Connectors

To date, there are the following current sockets of AMD processors :

  • For office computers, the most optimal is AM1. The key advantages of this computing platform are low cost and an acceptable level of performance for solving the most simple problems.

  • A higher level of performance can boast a processor connector FM2 +. The main scope of its application is multimedia stations and entry-level gaming computers.

  • The AM3 / AM3 + platform is even more productive, which is ideal for creating mid-level gaming computers.

  • The AM4 socket announced at the beginning of March belongs to the solutions of the premium class . Its processors allow solving the most difficult tasks.

Socket AM1 - the ideal solution for office systems

In April 2014, the AM1 platform debuted. The second name is PGA-771. These processors have 771 contacts, 4 cores, an integrated video adapter, a low clock speed and 2 levels of cache memory. The performance of this platform is enough to solve the most simple tasks, which include office packages or browsing websites. The younger models of the CPU belong to the Septron lineup, and the older ones to the AMD Athlon. The AM1 socket allows you to use the entire line of processor data.

The processor connector FM2 +

Some AMD sockets allow you to install processor solutions with an integrated production video subsystem. Among them are FM1, FM2 and the current FM2 +. The second designation of the latter is PGA904. This platform is suitable for building an entry-level gaming system or an advanced station.

The production platforms AM3 and AM3 +

Until recently, one of AMD's most productive processor connectors was AM3 / AM3 +. The first wave of these decisions made its debut in 2009 and was called AM3. It belonged to the chips series Septron and Athlon II. The flagship processor in this case was the second generation AMD Phenom.

Socket AM3 + debuted in 2011 with processors series FX-XXXX. The speed of these CPUs was lower than that of similar Intel products, but sufficient for a wide range of tasks. An additional advantage of this platform is the lower cost of computing systems based on it. These processor connectors are compatible with each other. In contrast to the previously discussed platforms, in this case the graphics card was not integrated with the graphics card. But higher speed was provided by a cache system of 3 levels.

The younger AM1 and FM2 + chips can boast of only two levels of fast memory. This family of processors is great for creating average in the level of performance of gaming systems. Also, based on them, you can implement a server of the initial class or graphic station.

The most recent socket AM4

In December 2016, AMD introduced an updated computer platform, which received the designation AM4, or PGA1331. It was supposed to unite all the previously considered sockets AMD: on its basis should be created as the most simple PCs and high-performance computing systems. In this case, the chips include the north and south bridges of the set of system logic.

This arrangement of the crystal improves the performance of the processor and reduces the cost of manufacturing motherboards. The chips for this socket belong to the Rizen line. The younger ones have index 3 and include 4 cores and 8 logical streams. Average CPU models come with an index of 5 and have 6 cores and 12 threads. The flagship line of chips has an index of 7, it is physically equipped with 8 cores, which can process the code in 12 streams.

Results

Within the framework of this article, the main AMD sockets were considered. No matter how it was, the main one is AM4. This processor socket will replace all the others in the foreseeable future, and it will be based on both entry-level personal computers and high-performance computing systems. All other decisions will disappear from store shelves as stocks are sold.
