Ambarnous weevil: a description of how to get rid of

Ambarnous weevil is one of the main and most dangerous pests of grain crops (barley, rice, rye, wheat, buckwheat, maize, and pasta), which can render inefficient reserves in the scale of both the kitchen facilities and huge grain storage facilities. For farmers, its appearance is a catastrophe, because it is visually insignificant, the beetle causes a huge damage to the crop.

Ambarny weevil: description

Characterized by small dimensions (about 4 mm), the pest is distinguished by a dark brown, almost black color, a narrow long body and the presence of wings. For flights such an insect is not adapted, which does not prevent it from moving successfully over a considerable distance with the help of a man. On ships with industrial lots of grain, by land - by train and cars, from the continent to the continent travels a granary weevil. How to get rid of such a dangerous insect?

The process of reproduction of such insects occurs in a warm period: the female in each grain with a thin proboscis gnaws a small hole (in the corn grain - two), lays an egg in it, after which the cork from the flour is covered with a slit. This trick makes the damaged grains externally virtually indistinguishable from the whole. Distinguish "a dirty trick" is possible if a handful of grains are thrown into the water: damaged (populated) specimens will surface, the whole will sink to the bottom. With a visual inspection, you can see that the grain with the larvae is ten times as much as the color of the undamaged ones.

Life cycle of granary weevil

Fecundity of one individual is 150-300 eggs with a life cycle of 3-4 months; Males live a little longer, about 5 months. The length of development of the larva (about 3 mm long, white, with a brown head) depends on temperature and humidity and is 3-6 weeks. One can only imagine how many thousands of pests are capable of producing only one pair of beetles per year. At a temperature of +4 о С, larvae stop in development, at -5 о С - die. Upon completion of development, they turn into almost transparent pupae 3-5 mm in length. After 7 - 22 days, the newly formed beetles formed in the shell gnaw through the passage and exit the shelter outside. The average life span of an adult specimen is about 2 years. Within one day, one larva destroys 0,08-0,67 mg of grain, gnawing its internal contents; Accordingly, the mass amount of these insects is able to destroy a significant amount of stocks.

Destruction of the beetle in kitchen stocks

How to deal with such a dangerous pest as a granary weevil? How to get rid of so small but harmful insect in the barn and in the kitchen? In the context of household stocks, when a weevil is found in the croup, the latter should not be used for food, because carcinogens are contained in the secretions of insects and larvae. Infected products must be discarded, and with a weevil to enter into a tough and, possibly, long struggle. Cereals are recommended to be stored in cans or hermetically sealed containers - not in packages that the granary weevil (photo above) easily gnaws through its sharp teeth. Ambarne weevils are heat-loving creatures and die at low temperatures. Therefore, as one of the ways to get rid of bugs, you can use cold: products that serve as a potential food for the weevil - put in the freezer. Destroying the tiny inhabitant and high temperatures. So, at +40 o C, the weevil weevil dies within 2 days, at +50 о С - after 6 hours. After processing, food stocks should be placed in sealed containers with tight lids, inaccessible to insects.

Folk methods

Repulsively on the granary weevil garlic, peeled from the husks and placed in a container with croups. For preventive purposes, cabinets, where food products are stored, must be treated with soap and acetic soap. On the shelves can be decomposed bay leaf and lavender, the smell of which weevil does not perceive. Do not make large cereal stocks, the products are better purchased as they are used.

Ambarny weevil: fighting measures

It is very difficult to get rid of the granary weevil in warehouses, because the insect is hiding in hard-to-reach places, and being inside the grains is practically invulnerable, and is capable of destroying 10 to 30% of harvested grain. The struggle with the granary weevil consists of the following measures:

  • Strong cooling of the grain (up to -10 о С), which can be used both for preventive purposes and in the process of destroying existing pests. Cooling is carried out in dry weather by ventilation and ventilation. This requires mandatory monitoring of humidity.
  • Partly from the granary weevil can be disposed of by removing it on sieves with holes or using aspirating preparations. Any movement of the grain mass negatively affects the state of harmful insects, reduces their numbers and development.

Chemical methods for combating weevil

One of the effective methods of getting rid of granary weevil is chemical disinfection of grain - a radical measure consisting in aerosol or gas treatment. Aerosol disinfection is carried out with the help of preparations "Aktellik", "Karate", "Fufanon", "Arrivo". This treatment, the advantage of which is the high efficacy of the drug, is produced by special organizations. The shortcomings of such a method include a long period of time before the resolution of the sale of grain.

Gas disinfection is carried out by such drugs as "Foscom", "Alfos", "Fostoksin", "Magtoxin". Beforehand, the premises must be carefully sealed, and fumigation should be carried out with the involvement of specialized organizations.

Prevention against granary weevil

It is important to follow preventive measures:

  • Before falling asleep in the bunkers, the grain must necessarily be cleaned of weeds and grain impurities;
  • Separately store grain of different harvesting periods and different humidity;
  • Carefully clean containers from last year's grain and debris reserves;
  • Monitor the moisture content of the grain (not less than 14%); In the case of long-term storage, this indicator should be reduced by 2-4%, which increases the resistance of the grain to damage by the weevil and limits the vital activity of the pest;
  • To destroy the contaminated stocks.

If there is a strong infection, it will be necessary to fumigate the grain and storage facilities with the drugs intended for this purpose.

As a preventive method, it is necessary to keep cleanliness and order in warehouses, treat them chemically (by gas disinfestation, aerosol and wet disinfection of warehouses), before falling asleep to produce whitewash.

Inspection of grain for infection with granary weevil should be done every 2 weeks in summer and once a month in winter. The analysis for infection is conducted according to regulatory methods and standards.
