Add liquid glass to concrete: some nuances

Liquid glass is often used by builders when composing various building mixtures. As a rule, it contains calcium silicates or potassium silicates. The price of production of such materials is low, adding the same liquid glass to concrete, you significantly increase its quality. Given the presence of silicates in its composition, it can be used in the production of refractory structures.

You can add liquid glass to concrete, pursuing the following objectives:

  • Strengthening moisture-proof properties.
  • Improvement of antiseptic qualities.
  • Increased refractoriness.

It is used in the following areas

Liquid glass is widely used in the foundry industry, it is impossible to produce soap and paper without it.

If we talk about construction, then the scope of use is much narrower. In particular, when liquid glass is added to concrete, it can be used as a high-quality primer. In amounts up to ¼ can be added to the building concrete to improve its qualities. So, with an increase in water resistance, it is added in an amount of 15%, in order to increase the refractory qualities, it is necessary to add 25%. With the same goals, builders impregnate this structure with wooden structures.

It is most justified to add liquid glass to concrete when installing foundation cushions of buildings located in moist lowlands, in places with a high groundwater position, for the purpose of constructing hydraulic structures, as well as for the construction of boiler rooms, stoves and fireplaces. The foundation with such an additive not only protects the building from moisture, but does not need any additional treatment with antiseptics.

This is how silica and aluminosilicate foundations are prepared. In principle, if there are adequate buildings and at least minimal building experience and equipment, it is quite possible to cook them even at home.

It is necessary to know exactly the conditions for the preparation of standard concrete and the properties of its concrete brand. So, when using the brand M200 and above, 72 liters of liquid glass should be added to one cube of the finished solution. The voltage of the mixture at this ratio is the most optimal. However, in the amateur construction of such high qualities of the structure is not required, and therefore it is perfectly permissible to add liquid glass to the concrete, bringing the ratio up to 1: 10. So you can save a lot of money.

Consider how the composition is prepared for waterproofing:

  • The glass is added only to the concrete mixture, using one liter of glass per 10 liters.
  • The composition should be used for only 5-7 minutes!

Together with concrete, this composition forms a thick and rapidly hardening mixture. It is possible to find a few simple ways out of this situation. If high quality of the solution is not required, you can dilute it with water, but the waterproofing is obtained so-so. Still, it is more appropriate to add liquid glass to concrete, preparing it in small portions. In the case of a high-quality construction mixture, the foundation will have excellent technical qualities.
