Zoological Park, located in the city of Kiev, is a research, environmental and cultural-educational organization. It is the object of the Ukrainian natural reserve fund, which is of national importance. The initiators of the creation of this unique institution were professors of the University of St. Vladimir and the Polytechnic Institute, pedagogues of gymnasiums, public figures, doctors, lovers of wildlife.

History of creation and development, address

The Zoo in Kiev was officially formed and began operating on March 21, 1909. It was then that he was given a territory for the location in the botanical garden, which belonged to the University of St. Vladimir, and allowed the collection of money for the maintenance of pets. After considering the petition, M. M. Chikhachev, while holding the post of vice-governor, in May 1909 agreed to the establishment at the entrance to the Zoo in Kiev, a photo of which is presented in the article, a "box for collecting money." Thanks to this funding in the same year, the number of pets was already 115 species. First, the zoo in Kiev was kept at the expense of philanthropy by philanthropists and private individuals. The collection was mostly wild animals, which their owners refused. Such patrons were the businessman A. Tereshchenko, the architect V. Gorodetsky, the Countess M. Brotskaia, the artist S. Svyatoslavsky, the keeper of the Askania-Nova reserve F. Falz-Fein, the Tsar Nicholas II.

Expansion

In 1910, the territory of the zoological garden has almost doubled, which was promoted by the board of the University. Since that moment the institution already owned one and a half hectares. The city authorities helped the zoo and twice a year allocated subsidies in the amount of 1,000 and 1,500 royal rubles. In May 1912 the administration provided a new place for the establishment of the institution, which was most suitable for him. Its area was 23.2 hectares. It was in the suburb of Shulyavka, near the building of the Polytechnic Institute. The relief of this area was not suitable for the construction of a residential building, but it was suitable for the formation of the zoo. The ravines were convenient for substantiating the rates for birds, in the upper part they were equipped with detachments, cages and aviaries. Housewarming took place in 1913, but in the future the development of the zoological park stopped for a while. This was the reason for the First World War, and after - the Civil War. After going through significant difficulties, enthusiasts were able to save the animals and equip the institution for the rest of the fighting. In 1919, the Zoo in Kiev became the property of a newly created state. He was given the official status. Venanti Burdzinsky was appointed the head of the Kiev Zoological Park. During the 1920s, the institution began to develop at a rapid pace. The collection was replenished with new kinds of animals, the construction of the elephant, the premises for monkeys, the expansion of old aviaries, the improvement of the water supply system, and the active work of scientific work. In the mid-30's, the zoo in Kiev secured all the territory that was enclosed by a fence. The veterinary hospital began functioning, in which several laboratories and departments were equipped, an animal pharmacy, an exemplary forge, and a procedure chamber were opened. The Patriotic War brought its own, negative adjustments: the park was destroyed, almost all animals were exported to Germany. In 1943, after the liberation of Kiev, he was quickly restored by the team. On April 10, 1944, the activity of the institution was resumed.
