Geography

This region is located in the central part of the East European Plain, in the north-west of Ukraine. It borders on the south with Vinnytsia, in the west - with Khmelnytsky and Rivne, in the east - with the Kiev regions, and in the north - with the Republic of Belarus. The map of Zhytomyr region, given in the article, clearly demonstrates this. This region is an ancient Slavic land, which is commonly called Polissya. By its area it occupies the fifth place in Ukraine - 29.9 thousand square kilometers. Its length from north to south is 320, and from west to east - 170 kilometers. The climate here is moderately continental: a warm wet summer and a mild cloudy with frequent thaws in winter. The average temperature in summer is plus 18.5 degrees Celsius, in winter - minus 5.5 degrees. The average annual precipitation is 753 millimeters. On the territory of Zhytomyr region there are more than 220 rivers, all of them belong to the Dnipro basin. The largest of them are Irsha, Irpen, Sluch and Teterev. In addition, there are a lot of lakes here. The territory of the region is characterized by zones of forest-steppe and mixed forests. In the southern part of the region, chernozem soils predominate, and in Polesie there are gray forest, marsh and sod-podzolic soils. The region is considered to be the second in the country for forest plantations, forests (mostly conifers) occupy 30 percent of the territory here.

Zhytomyr region: districts, cities

The administrative center is the city of Zhitomir. The region is represented by 23 districts: Andrushevsky, Baranovsky, Berdichevsky, Brusilovsky, Volodarsko-Volynskiy, Emilchinsky, Zhytomyr, Korosten, Korostyshevsky, Luginsky, Lyubarskiy, Malinsky, Narodichsky, Novograd-Volynsky, Ovruch, Olevsky, Popielnyansky, Radomyshly, Romanovsky, Ruzhinsky , Chervonoarmeysky, Chernyakhovsky, Chudnovsky. Zhitomir, Berdichev, Korosten, Malich, Novograd-Volynsky, Andrushevka, Baranovka, Korostyshev, Radomyshl, Ovruch, Olevsk are the cities of Zhytomyr region. In general, the region has 1,667 settlements. Of these, five cities of regional importance, six regional, 43 urban type settlements. The number of rural councils is 579. This is the administrative division of Zhytomyr region. The villages constitute the most part of the settlements of this region - 1613.

Economy

Since Zhytomyr region is rich in forest and land resources, it determined its specialization - agrarian and raw materials. The basis of the economy of this region is agriculture and processing of agricultural products. In addition, a significant contribution is made by the construction industry, which is based on local raw materials. In terms of the growth of the main social and economic indicators, Zhytomyr Oblast ranks fifth in Ukraine.

Industry

The main role in the economy of the region is played by the food industry, machine building and metalworking, light, woodworking and building materials industries. The main products of metalworking and machine building are woodworking and metal cutting machines, equipment for the chemical industry, for fodder production and livestock, road equipment and machinery, spare parts for tractors, cryogenic equipment, automation equipment and devices, electrical products, and machinery for processing enterprises of agro-industrial Complex. Light industry is mainly represented by sewing, shoe, knitwear factories and linen fabric production. More than 120 bakery, confectionery, beer, non-alcoholic, meat and dairy, sugar, flour-milling, alcoholic beverages represent the food industry. Zhytomyr region has more than 60 plants for the production of building materials.

Agriculture

Zhytomyr region is one of three in Ukraine (together with Chernigov and Zakarpattia), where during the period of independence in the 90s of the last century there was practically no reduction in the volume of agricultural production. The agro-industrial complex of the region employs 721 enterprises and 638 farm enterprises, as well as seven thousand individual peasant and more than 340,000 private subsidiary farms. Among agricultural production there is a slight advantage in the direction of crop production - 53 percent, respectively, the share of animal husbandry is 47 percent. Crop production is represented by grain-beet cultivation in the forest-steppe zone and grain-potato in Polissya. A significant share of technical crops was occupied by sugar beet, hops and flax-dolgunets. Livestock specializes in the meat and milk industry, in addition, poultry farming, pig breeding, sheep breeding and beekeeping are sufficiently developed.

Population

In the region there are more than 1 million 266 thousand people. The urban population of the region is 56 percent, and the rural population is 44 percent. Its greatest density falls on the southern regions of the region, as well as Berdichev and Zhitomir. 85 nationalities live on the territory of the region. The share of Ukrainians is 85 percent, Russians about 8 percent.
