What to put in the shade in the country - what vegetables, what flowers?

Most plants require an abundance of sunlight for development. But shady areas will inevitably form on the site. Really give them to the weeds? In this article, we will tell you what to put in the shade on the dacha of vegetables and flowers. And let not one square centimeter of the earth is empty.

Gardening in the shade

As you know, 8-10 hours of direct sunlight are the optimal conditions for the growth of most cultures. But there are plants that are resistant to shading.

Therefore, in drawing up a plan for planting next year, you need to consider several nuances: how the sun will illuminate your site, how the illumination of the territory changes during the day, what parts remain in the shadows all the time. These factors are very important: sometimes the lack of ultraviolet light only slightly reduces the volume of the crop, and in other cases, a shaded piece of land is best given to hosts and moss.

What to put in the shade at the cottage under the trees?

First of all, we note that for a successful outcome, you must follow these rules:

  1. Remove low and dangling branches.
  2. Thin out the crown so that it misses the sun's rays.
  3. Use raised flower beds to prevent plants from competing with tree roots for nutrients.
  4. Ditch the soil as thoroughly as possible without damaging the roots.
  5. Timely apply fertilizers, ideally before planting you need to make a nutrient layer, richly enriched with compost (to a depth of about 10 cm).

What to put in the shade at the cottage under the trees? Of all vegetables, leaf cultures are most tolerant of a small deficit of sunlight. In hot regions, it is even preferable to grow them in conditions of slight shading, so they will remain tender and will not be bitter.

Such plants include: salad of all kinds, garlic, chard, green onions, cabbage (including kohlrabi and broccoli), rukola, spinach, leek, sorrel. Of the root crops - radish, radish, potatoes, beets, carrots, turnips.

And what can you put in the shade in the country house of spices? The list of such herbs includes basil, parsley, dill, chervil, coriander. A wild strawberry will calmly react to such conditions.

If you doubt whether there will be enough sunlight for a good growth of these crops, start small and evaluate the result. If you have too much shadow on the site, the leaves will be thin, flaccid and pale. Vegetables and greens will have a weak taste and, most likely, will lose crunchiness.

How to improve the harvest in case of sun deficit?

In addition to caring for trees and applying fertilizers, gardeners resort to such cunning as mulching the soil between vegetables with a reflective film. It can be of different shades, for example, white is universal, and red material is best for growing tomatoes. The most effective is a metallized film, because it reflects most of the light. With such an assistant, the list of things that can be planted in the shade at the dacha significantly expands.

After all, the benefits of using this unconventional mulching are:

  • Increase in the amount of light in the vegetation cover;
  • Local increase of air temperature;
  • Increasing the intensity of photosynthesis, and hence, the growth of culture;
  • Reduction of damage to beds of some insects (in particular, aphids and thrips);
  • An increase in the quantity of the crop and its quality.

In addition, it should be borne in mind that the soil is warming up in the shade, so you should not plant plants before the due date, otherwise they may become frozen.

Flowerbed in the shade of trees

Despite the fact that trees do not allow direct sunlight in the forest, you probably noticed that there is never even a patch of bare ground. This is an excellent proof that there are plants that will feel good and in a light shadow

This arrangement is ideal for nasturtium, because if it receives too much sunlight, its leaves dry out and the flowers become smaller. The palette of colors is wide - from bright tropical colors of Amazon Jewel, Alaska, Copper Sunset to soft pastel colors of Moonlight variety or cream-red from Vanilla Berry.

Looking for beautiful flowers for a slice? Do not know what you can put in the shade in the country house under the trees? Choose a snapdragon, pyrethrum, sage, wax-flower and double pansies.

But trees take away from flowers not only sunlight, but also moisture from the soil. What to put in the shade in the country, if there is no possibility to water often? There are flowers that are characterized by drought resistance, for example: periwinkle, spurge, lily of the valley, cyclamen of the Caucasus, beautiful dicentra, or heart, geranium large-crowned, hyacinthoid spanish, osmanthus.

If, on the contrary, the shadow of the trees is combined with the shadow from the buildings or the fence, moisture may stagnate on the site. In such conditions, a good fern grows, a Japanese anemone, a gerbil high, a Canadian turf, many types of host, hellebore, moss.

What to put in the country in the shade of the house?

As a rule, this is a rather unfavorable place for plants, especially when it comes to the northern side.

Vegetables in such conditions are not recommended for growing. But some flowers can refine this part of your site. In addition, in such plants often leaves have an unusual shape, which gives the flower bed a special charm. What to put in the shade at the dacha to decorate it? Pay attention to such flowers as the catchment area (aquilegia), digitalis (digitalis), nigella (black cherry). To add gentle fragrances, plant tobacco (nicotiana) and forget-me-nots.

Along the perimeter of the site

A decent part of the territory is obscured by its fencing. What to put in the shade of a fence in the country? If the plants have enough "sunbathing" 4-6 hours a day, then you can use these plots for the vegetables listed above, or even put useful perennials there.

For example, currants, gooseberries, hazel, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries and irga grow best on sunny places, but also tolerate shading well. It is possible to reduce the number of crops, but you will still use this piece of land. The same goes for some varieties of cherries and plums.

And what to plant along the fence in the country in the shade, if you want to hide it? Many gardeners like to hide the fence or the walls of buildings behind a green screen from perennial vines and climbing plants.

For planting in the shade suitable: akebia pyaternaya, clematis, hydrangea curling (lianate), schizophragma, honeysuckle winding, stauntonia six-leafed.

Such beautiful and useful crops can be planted even in the shaded areas of your dacha.
