What kind of bird is called "sower of oak"?

Nature is very persistent in trying to help plants spread their seeds. She invented and implemented a huge number of adaptations that allow new sprouts to appear at enormous distances from the mother plant. For example, light dandelion seeds are equipped with parachutes allowing them to fly in the wind, and thistle seeds firmly cling to human clothes and animal hair with small thorns. And who can help the oak?

What does the acorn look like?

Oak is a powerful and strong tree. He has a massive trunk and a mighty crown. No wonder that its seeds do not differ easily. The sower of an oak should have enough forces to lift and transfer a heavy and smooth fruit.

The acorn has a leathery pericarp and a solid plume (cap). This is a single-seeded fruit, formed from the fused simplified oak blossoms. The fruits of chestnut and beech are also acorns, but in the oak acorn there is always only one fruit, and in beech and chestnut the plum may contain several fruits.

A bird feeding on acorns

A small bird with bright plumage lives in the forest. It's called a jay. This bird is a sower of oak. In size, the bird is no bigger than a dove. She has short wings and a strong beak. It is difficult for a bird to travel long distances, but in the crowns of trees it feels quite confident and is able to move around branches quite quickly.

Most often, the jays settle in deciduous forests, where a lot of oaks grow. The basis of the ration of birds is plant food, but they nurture the chicks with insects, and adult jays do not abandon the animal feed completely. But the favorite delicacy of feathered fidgets is acorns. Birds split a dense shell with a beak, and when they eat, they start to take oak fruits in secluded places. Preparing for the winter, the jay can make up to four kilograms of reserves, in different caches. Many caches are forgotten, and acorns, hidden in a coniferous litter, germinate. That's why people think that the jay is an oak sower. Thanks to a small stocky bird, a young oak shoot appears in different places. This helps to preserve the majestic trees.
