What is the scleroplasty of the eyes?

Many people, hearing about such an operation as scleroplasty of the eye, only shrug their shoulders, since they do not even have a vague idea of this type of surgical intervention. Now, somehow more common operations arrive, such as appendectomy, bougie or hernia. Many ophthalmic operations are practically unknown to a simple average person.

What is the scleroplasty of the eyes?

Scleroplasty of the eye is an ophthalmic operation, which is carried out with the aim of stopping the progression of the myopic process in the eyeball. Primarily carried out in childhood adolescence, although this is not an absolute constant. Its necessity is due to the physiological features of the eye in children suffering from nearsightedness. Myopic eye differs from normal with an enlarged anteroposterior size. This fact is confirmed by ultrasonic examination of the eyes of patients with myopia. As a rule, their eyes are a couple of millimeters larger than those with normal age refraction. One millimeter of the size of the eye is equal to three to four diopters. Therefore, the larger the anteroposterior size or the axis of the eye, the higher, respectively, the myopic clinical refraction in this eye. In adolescence, not only the growth of the musculoskeletal system and hormonal changes occur, during this period the load on the organ of vision and the increase in the size of the eyeball also increase. Sclera in myopic children is very weakened, if it is not strengthened in time, then a sharp jump in the myopic process may occur for the worse. To prevent this unwanted consequence, scleroplasty of the eyes is performed. In no case should it be confused with another consonant manipulation, such as scleroplasty of the veins. These are completely different concepts. With scleroplasty of the veins, special sclerosing preparations are introduced into the varicose-dilated veins of the lower extremities, which reduce the signs of the underlying disease. With scleroplasty, nothing like this happens.

Scleroplasty in children is done in several modifications. However, the principle of all such actions is one: subconjunctival, several grafts are implanted in several squares, the task of which is to strengthen the sclera and prevent the posterior segment from widening in size. At the age of 12 years, such a surgical intervention is done under intravenous anesthesia, in the adolescent period it is quite possible to carry out under the influence of local anesthetics, which are widely represented in the pharmaceutical market in the form of convenient and very effective drops.

Usually, scleroplasty of the eye is fairly easily tolerated by children of all age groups. Complications of this operation are minimal. The qualification of an ophthalmologist is the main criterion for the successful outcome of this medical manipulation. Possible complications are:

-rejection of the scleral flap;

- displacement of the flap to the limb;

- uveitis, endophthalmitis;

- movement of the flap under any oculomotor muscle and caused by this action, double vision in the eyes;

-Closing of seams on conjunctiva.

However, with the worked out technique, such undesirable effects are practically not encountered. It should also be remembered that this type of operation is not a panacea for myopia. He only "slows down" the aggression of myopia only for a certain time, but does not completely eliminate it. With myopic disease, when the progress of myopia is uncontrollable, scleroplasty can not have any curative effect at all.
