What is cotton down?

Cotton down is a short (no more than 15 mm), soft and fluffy fiber, which is obtained after the separation of long cotton fibers. From it are made thread or yarn, which are used in the manufacture of light and breathable textile products. Recycled material is called lint, which has found its application in the creation of different types of printed products, cotton wool and much more.

What is cotton down?

These are short and slightly coarse fibers, which are removed from the seeds of an adult plant after the separation of cotton fiber. There are two of its types: the first and second removal. Cotton lint is used not only in textile production, but also in other areas, for example, to make cotton wool, insulation materials and many other purposes.

Like small white clouds

With the approach of summer cotton fields are filled with fluffy white clouds. As the weather gets warmer, the fluff becomes particularly intense. The material surrounding the cotton seeds does not just look beautiful. Cotton down consists of fibrous seed hair that helps the seeds to float through the air, giving them a wider distribution spectrum.

Cotton lint

What is the name of cotton lint? In English, "lint " means " fiber". This concept is also applicable to cotton lint obtained from seeds. After separation from the long vegetative filaments, as a rule, a certain amount of short fiber remains, which is about 4-8 percent of the total seed weight. The removal of lint from the seeds is carried out in several stages. This process involves execution for 2-3 sessions. This is necessary in order to be able to increase the amount of material shot and divide it according to qualitative characteristics.

Production and Applications

Cotton down serves as a raw material for the production of such products as cotton wool, cotton wool, padding and absorbing articles, various artificial fibers, as well as films, varnishes, explosives and much more. Lint is used in medicine as a material for making tissue for surgical clothing, the feature of which is that on one side its surface is soft and fluffy, while on the other hand it is smoother and more glossy. At cotton processing plants, a complex process of seed lining takes place. Despite the fact that cotton lint is considered a low-grade material, its manufacture takes place with observance of all necessary technical conditions.
