What is an exposition in literature and how is it built?

Everyone is perfectly familiar with fiction, with the type of stories and novels. However, very few people know that in fact the division of the work into chapters is only a tinsel, which allows the reader to more comfortably perceive the essence of what has been stated by the author. The structure of the story is based on exposure (or stringing), action, climax and denouement. All these components form the very intrigue that makes us leaf through pages of books one after another. Therefore, now we will try to understand what an exposition is in literature, what part of the narrative it contains and what it is characterized by.

Books in which you can meet the string

Unlike many other components of the story, the plot of all events and the description of the characters' characters occurs in all books, regardless of the year of release, the style of presentation and other indicators. However, in order to understand what an exposition is in literature, it is sometimes enough to read only the first chapter of the story, and sometimes it covers almost a quarter of the book. There is an acquaintance with the main characters, the reader will find out at what time all subsequent actions will occur, as well as the place (or places) where the events will develop, and much more. Often in this part of the story a certain background is told, which allows in more complete colors to understand the whole further essence of the narrative. Often, exposure in literature also serves as the beginning of a conflict or action, which will be the basis of the whole story in the future.

What can be the length of exposure?

As a rule, the dimensions of individual parts of the narrative depend on its total volume. The larger the book, the more attention it pays to every detail, of which the entry consists. Now, in order to better understand what an exposition is in literature, let's give a small example: "Olga, after she got a job as a duty lawyer, moved into her new office. For half a day she managed to get acquainted with her employees, after which she called her husband and told about everything. " Here is an example of a brief tie, which may not be present in the stories, but in separate scenes. These events the author can develop further, and until the story develops an obvious conflict, they will be considered an exposition. However, even in these two sentences, we already see the prerequisites for further actions of the heroes, and every reader, by virtue of his imagination, can come up with a continuation.

Types of exposition

Today, the outset, which is present in every literary work, is usually divided into four different types. Some people understand what an exposition is in literature, it's easier on these examples. So now we will take a closer look at each of them. The first option is standard, that is, the string is straight. This means that the description of the place, time and main characters of the story occurs at the beginning of the book. Option number two - delayed exposure. In this case, the author singles out the first part of the novel to describe an important event, after which he acquaints the reader with the characters and other circumstances of his book. The plot is inverse, which means that all the information about the novel is set out in the last chapters of the novel. And finally, there is such a term as interhistory. This means that the writer reveals the characters of the characters and the places where events occur, mixed with the main part of the story.

How does the plot affect the reader?

As you can see, the exposition in literature is first of all acquaintance, intrigue. If it is direct, then the reader can immediately assume whether it will be interesting for him to further study a particular book. In all other cases, especially in the latter, the plot (more precisely, its temporary absence) creates a huge intrigue (and who is Karl, and what kind of city is N, etc.). This is one of those techniques that writers use to become popular and gather as much as possible the public around their person.
