Unit of measurement of current strength - what does this mean?

From birth and throughout the life of a person is surrounded by electrical appliances. These include: household appliances, lighting our homes and streets, mobile communications, even modern cars are switching to electricity. All these devices consume an electric current, some take it from the power grids, others draw from batteries and accumulators, third from alternative energy sources (windmills, solar batteries, etc.). And how many of the people know what the unit of current measurement is, and what is the electric current? In this article we will answer these questions.

Let's start, perhaps, with the basic concepts. An electric current is a directed ordered motion in a conductor of charged particles. Consider the conditions for the existence of a current:

  • The presence of free electrons in a metallic conductor;
  • The presence of an electric field (such a field is created due to a current source).

Now we turn to the consideration of such a notion as the unit of measurement of the current intensity. This scalar quantity is denoted by the Latin letter I. The definition of the unit of current strength is carried out by the ratio of the charge q passing through the cross section of the metallic conductor to the time interval t over which the electric current passed through the conductor. Accordingly, the formula has the following form: I = q / t. The unit of measurement of the current intensity shows which charge will pass through the cross- section of the wire per unit of time.

Everything is quite elementary. Now we will analyze what conventional units of current measurement exist. For this it is enough to look into the international system of units (SI). It follows from this that the unit of current measurement is Ampere. This unit received its name in honor of the French physics and mathematics Andre-Marie Ampere (1775-1836). He introduced such terms as electrodynamics, electrostatics, solenoids, EMF, galvanometer, electric current, voltage and others. The scientist AM Amper predicted the emergence of such a science as "cybernetics", he became the pioneer of the mechanical interaction of conductors with an electric current, introduced the rule of determining the directions of the current.

Now we will try to disassemble this concept from the point of view of elementary physics. For this, it is necessary to illuminate the properties of the passage of an electric current along two parallel conductors. If charged particles move along two wires in one direction, then such conductors will begin to attract, and if the particles move in different directions, the conductors will tend to push apart from each other. For a unit of current strength of one ampere, it is considered to be such a force, through which two parallel wires one meter long, spaced at a distance of one meter, will begin to interact with a force of 0.0000002N.

Summing up, let's say that knowing about such a concept as current strength will help determine the amount of energy consumed by electrical devices. Due to this, it is easy to calculate the load of the wiring in your home and, accordingly, secure your home from fire or damage to electrical equipment, which often occurs when the electrical appliances are not distributed correctly.
