History of the Institute of Emergency Care

The Sklifosovsky Institute was founded in 1803 by the philanthropist and benefactor Count Nikolai P. Sheremetyev. Initially, the hospital was called the Hospice house. In it were 50 people, sick of various ailments, and 25 girls-orphans. It was the very first institution in which they provided medical care to the poorest sections of the population, and also fed the homeless and orphans. Then, during the war of 1812, here were located hospitals - first the French army, and later Russian. Until 1922, the Hospice House served as a hospital for the wounded soldiers of the Russian-Turkish, and then Russian-Japanese wars. Later, on the basis of the Sheremetyev Hospital (the second name of the Hospice House), the Institute of Emergency Ambulance was founded, which since 1929 is named after the great Russian surgeon Nikolai Vasilyevich Sklifosovsky. Talented physicians continued the work of this great man, and an emergency surgical service was established on the basis of the military hospital. Also, the Sklifosovsky Institute became a pioneer in the development and construction of a state system to provide first aid for various injuries and poisonings. And also for the first time the employees of the Institute raised the issue of the urgent need to conduct preventive work to prevent domestic injuries and accidents at work.

Biography of N. V. Sklifosovsky

We can not say a few words about the outstanding medical worker - Nikolai Vasilyevich Sklifosovsky. A great scientist, professor, was born in a farm near the city of Dubossary (Transnistria), March 25, 1836. He received secondary education in Odessa in the gymnasium, and then, in 1859, graduated from the Moscow University, the Faculty of Medicine. He received his doctorate in Kharkov four years after the defense of the thesis "On a bloody okolomatochnoy tumor." For a long time worked in clinics in Germany. During the Prussian War he worked in the infirmary at the dressing station. After returning to Russia he published many works on medicine. In the Imperial Medical-Surgical Academy he headed the Department of Surgery. He was an innovator in carrying out very complex operations, such as cutting out a goiter and many others, which no one had done before. Participation in several military campaigns gave impetus to writing many medical works on providing emergency surgical care to the wounded. The last years of the surgeon were overshadowed by a serious illness, but nevertheless he was completely devoted to his favorite work until the last days.

Institute today

Today, the Sklifosovsky Institute (Moscow), as well as two centuries ago, annually saves thousands of human lives. All units of the hospital provide 24-hour assistance absolutely free of charge. But, in addition to providing emergency medical care, the Sklifosovsky Institute is engaged in scientific activities, training and consultation of specialists in the field of emergency care. Here there are more than 800 researchers, two academicians, 37 professors, as well as candidates and doctors of medical sciences. Over a year, specialists carry out more than 20 thousand of complicated operations. Research in the field of medicine is conducted in different directions. Every year, patents for various inventions are issued, scientific works and rational proposals are published. The medical work, as was said above, is conducted absolutely free of charge. In this institute there is a large laboratory base in which diagnostics of emergency conditions is carried out. With the help of the latest medical equipment , biochemical, clinical, immunological, microbiological, rheological and toxicological analyzes are carried out. There is a laboratory for the examination of HIV-infected patients. It is also possible to anonymously submit an analysis for the detection of HIV infection.
