The most interesting movies about war

"War" is a terrible word, because it means not just the opposition of the parties, but also the destruction in them of all human in the name of victory. Despite this, filmmakers around the world like to make films on this topic. In most of them, war is presented as something great and noble. Among the thousands of such projects, there are often really interesting films about the war that create a real picture of the audience. Let's look at what these pictures are.

The most "popular" war in the film world

Before considering a list of interesting films about the war, it is worthwhile to find out which battles are most often filmed.

In the US, the "loved ones" are the Civil War between the North and the South, as well as the struggle for independence. In addition, Americans often take pictures of the Second World War, however, most often they portray themselves as almost the only saviors of mankind from fascism. At the same time, Hollywood directors do not often remember Vietnam and Iraq.

Europeans the most popular war is the First and Second World Wars, and even the Germans.

In the USSR and Russia, the militaristic theme in the film industry has always occupied a special place. At different times, there were tapes about the Civil War, the Great Patriotic War and even the Afghan War.

The most interesting films about the war of 1941-1945. (American)

In the modern world, the champions for the number of militaristic paintings are the directors of the United States. Therefore, it is best to start with them.

In this aspect, it is worthwhile to clarify why the palm of the championship remains for the Americans, and not for the Russians. The fact is that there is a clear distinction between movies and serials about the war. If the full-length tape is removed by the Americans, the Russians are the unconditional world leaders in terms of the number of military series being shot.

What kind of film production pleased the audience of Hollywood? First of all, it should be noted that, although many American projects on the Second World War are rather superficial (for example, "Treasure Hunters" in 2014), among them there are very interesting films about the war of 1941-1945 (the list of the most famous of them is below).

First of all, we should mention the picture of Charlie Chaplin "The Great Dictator". Although it is considered a comedy and talks more about fascism than about war - this tape is one of the best of its kind. Behind the scenes of jokes and grimaces Chaplin clearly shows the underside of any armed conflict, as well as the changing psychology of the belligerents.

Also known is the drama "The Thin Red Line" (1998). In the center of the plot are several soldiers trapped in a military cauldron. Although each of them went to the front for their own reasons, now they are all driven by one desire - to survive.

The painting "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) is a unique phenomenon in American cinema. Despite the fact that the plot and the characters are completely invented, the scenes of battles, the equipment of soldiers are shown with such incredible accuracy and certainty that it is possible to study the history of military affairs in this picture.

But the "Pearl Harbor" (2001), despite the high box office, a dramatic plot and a whole galaxy of talented actors, is significantly inferior to the three above-mentioned projects. Although the creators of Pearl Harbor tried to show the reasons why the Americans took part in the Second World War, this is done somehow carelessly. Paradoxically, the mass of Pearl Harbor's shortcomings did not stop him from becoming one of the most beloved by the audience around the world.

Listing the most significant tape on the military theme, you can not ignore the "Inglourious Basterds" Quentin Tarantino. Although this tape refers more to the parodic cinema (depicting an alternative version of the development of history), it is very naturalistic to show the senselessness and ruthlessness of military success.

American drama about life in wartime: "Schindler's List"

It is worth noting that not all Hollywood paintings about World War II are American soldiers - the liberators of Europe (as they like to call themselves). They have very interesting films about the war, describing the life of Poles and Jews in the occupied territories.

This is Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" (1993). It practically does not show the horrors of military operations, but it is very vividly depicted, what it leads to and what fate could comprehend the whole world if fascism were not destroyed.

In the center of history is the German businessman O. Schindler, who at first plans to get rich with the help of war, but afterwards repents and spends his fortune on saving the Jews.

German films about World War II

Considering the most interesting films about the war with fascist Germany, it is worthwhile to pay attention to projects of German production.

The most famous in this genre is the painting "Submarine" (1981). She talks about the everyday life and battles of the crew of the German submarine in early 1941. It is worth noting that this is one of the most reliable bands on the military theme and has no analogues so far.

When you look through the most interesting films about the war, shot by the Germans, it often gives the impression that they are trying to justify themselves to the whole world for fascism. A striking example of this is the drama "Academy of Death" (2004).

It tells about a talented German boxer boy who got into the academy, where they prepare the future elite of the new Germany. For 110 minutes we are shown the evolution of the hero and his moral insight and further conscious refusal to belong to the cream of German society.

German films about the post-war period in the history of Germany

However, not all German cinema about the Second World has a penitential character. So, there are several tapes in which Allied soldiers are shown as real beasts, cruelly torturing the unfortunate conquered inhabitants of Germany. For the sake of justice, it should be noted that, although some of these paintings are actually filmed based on real events, they often show too a one-sided situation.

Among the most democratic projects in this regard, it is worth mentioning "4 days in May" (2011) and "Nameless - one woman in Berlin" (2008).

They show how valiant conquerors of fascism behaved in the liberated territories. And it is honestly shown that there were good and bad people among them. It is superfluous to add that in these paintings, wonderful Russian actors have appeared: Alexei Guskov, Andrei Merzlikin, Yevgeny Sidikhin and others.

Interesting films about the war of 1941-1945, shot in other countries

In other European countries there are also several really well-shot projects about the Second World War. Among them, the European analogue of the "Schindler's List" is "The Pianist" (2002) by Roman Polanski.

This tape (shot based on real events) tells about the fate of the Polish-Jewish composer and pianist Vladislav Shpilman. The hero does not participate in the war and does not see it. But he feels its influence on himself, and also gradually loses all his loved ones, and only a miracle allows him to survive without going insane.

Apart from all the other tapes of this genre is the Italian psychological drama of 1974 "Night porter". Her plot is centered on the memories of a former prisoner of a concentration camp, who accidentally meets her tormentor in peacetime. Unlike the "Pianist" and "Schindler's List", this picture is devoid of an optimistic finale. After all, it turns out that the most important executioners manage to escape punishment.

More optimistic is another Italian tape about World War II. This is the picture of Roberto Benigni "Life is Beautiful". She tells the lyrical story of a Jewish father who tries to protect his son from the horrors of fascist concentration camps in every way possible.

Considering the most interesting films about the war, it is superfluous to pay attention to the "Enemy at the Gates" (2001). This picture describes the fate of the Soviet sniper Vasily Zaitsev (a real person) and his "silent" confrontation with the German "colleague" Major Kening.

British films

Studying the most interesting films about the war, it's time to pay attention to the directors of Foggy Albion.

One of the most famous British projects about the World War II is "The English Patient" (1996). This story is about how the war affects people and maims their lives , depriving them of the most precious.

Also of interest is the 2007 ribbon "Atonement." Like the previous one, she does not talk more about fighting, but about their influence on people's lives, with the example of two lovers.

The best Soviet films about the Great Patriotic War

A lot of film projects have been devoted to the struggle against fascists in the USSR. Considering the most interesting films about the Great Patriotic War, it is worthwhile to focus only on the most famous ones.

Even when the victory was several years old, the Soviet film studio evacuated the film "Two Fighter" (1943) with Mark Burns in the title role. In addition to the story of the heroic soldier's friendship, she attracted the attention of the audience with the beautiful songs that Bernes performed in her.

Also, tapes were filmed about the work of the underground during the Great Patriotic War in the USSR. The most famous of them is "The Young Guard" (1948). Is it worthwhile to clarify that the script of this project was written on the basis of real events?

The Georgian painting "The Soldier's Father" (1964) was one of the most touching phenomena in the Soviet cinema of the post-war period. Perhaps this was facilitated by the fact that the script was written on the memoirs of a real front-line soldier.

As is clear from the title, the main character is the father of the boy at war. Having learned that the son is in the hospital, the man goes to him and soon he starts to fight.

In 1967, another Soviet soul tape about the Great Patriotic War came out: "Zhenya, Zhenya and Katyusha." In it, it was told about the adventures on the front of a young soldier-intellectual.

In 1972 the story of Boris Vasilyev was screened in the USSR "And the Dawns are Quiet Here ...". Although later this work was twice transferred to the big screen, the first tape remained the best.

The plot of the picture "The Dawns Here Are Quiet ..." is simple and tragic: this is the story of the heroic death of young front-line girls in an unequal battle with the fascists.

Leonid Bykov's picture "Only Old Men Are Going to Battle" (1973) became a real phenomenon in Soviet cinema and still rightfully holds the title of one of the best. She talks about the life of front-line fighter pilots. To make it more plausible, the footage from the real military chronicle is inserted into the tape.

Among the Soviet Union's film production devoted to the theme of war, there is simply nothing to compare the drama "Go and See" (1986). She tells about the life of Flora's teenager during the occupation of Byelorussia by the fascists. что со «Списком Шиндлера» и «Пианистом». By its tragedy and naturalism, "Go and See" can only be compared with Schindler's List and Pianist.

American pictures of other military conflicts

After listing the most interesting films about the war 1941-1945 (list above), it's time to pay attention to the tapes about other conflicts shot in the US.

Although Vietnam is a topic that the Americans are not very fond of, several outstanding films have been devoted to it. The first of them - the brainchild of Francis Ford Coppola "Apocalypse Now" (1979).

In this picture it is told about the special operation of American troops to eliminate one of their colonels. At the same time, Coppola skillfully shows the whole nauseating horror of the war and its destructive influence on the psyche.

The second outstanding American tape about Vietnam is "Born on July 4th" (1990). She talks about how a young man who became a cripple because of injury, rethinking his ideals and begins to fight for peace.

In 1996, the US released the drama "Courage in battle." This story is about investigating the circumstances of the death on the front of Captain Karen Walden, posthumously presented for the award. The main character in action is trying to find out whether she was a heroine or is a fake.

Soviet projects on other military conflicts

Having studied what the most interesting films about the war (the Great Patriotic War) were shot in the USSR, another militaristic film will be honestly considered.

The ribbon "Two Companions Served", 1968, is an exciting story about the Civil War. Unlike many of the paintings of the Soviet period, it does not have only the right side, since both the individual Red Army men and the White Guards are shown noble.

The painting "Officers" (1971) is devoted to events in the period of 1920-1960-ies. In the center of the plot is the combat officer Alexei Trofimov and his entourage. All of them have to survive a few wars and lose not one close person, but at the same time remain honest and courageous people.

Modern Russian war films

With the beginning of the 2000s, a large number of militaristic projects began to be filmed in Russia. Unfortunately, not all of them are worth attention. At the same time, there are some interesting films about the war (the Russians) that you can safely be proud of.

For example, the picture of 2008 "Admiral" about the fate of the Tsar's officer Alexander Kolchak. This is not only an interesting, but also a very beautiful film about noble people who managed to remain so until the end.

In 2005, Fyodor Bondarchuk withdrew the tape about the war in Afghanistan "9th Company". Despite some historical and technical inaccuracies, this project was not only one of the most expensive, but also the most worthy in this category.

Considering the new interesting films about the war, shot in Russia, it is impossible not to mention "We are from the future" (2008).

This fantastic tape tells how four black archaeologists from the XXI century. Turn out to be in 1942. Once in the conditions of real hostilities, each of the "guests from the future" revises their life position.

This picture has a sequel - "We are from the future-2", but it was much less successful. One of the reasons for this was the refusal of many actors from the first part to act in the sequel. In addition, the ardent anti-Ukrainian attitude of the project scared many potential viewers.

Modern foreign pictures of the war

Among foreign films about World War II, only two films can be noted. This is "Rage" (2014) about the fate of the crew of the tank "Sherman". And also the tape "For reasons of conscience" (2016), which tells about the American medics who, first because of religious beliefs, refused to take up arms.
