The iliopsoas muscle: what is fraught with its hypertonia?

The doctors of ancient Greece called her "the womb for the kidneys," the yogis consider her the most important muscle in the body, and Hippocrates first gave her the name "psoa" - the lumbar. Where is the ilio-lumbar muscle and what is its importance - consider in this article.

Features of anatomy

This muscle is formed by the union of two muscles: the iliac, which is located in the internal cavity of the pelvis, filling the ileum, and the large lumbar, which originates from the 12 vertebra of the thoracic region and, as it descends along the spine, is attached to the first four lumbar vertebrae.

The fibers of both muscles are joined together and attached to the front line of the thigh in the region of the hip joint, significantly affecting its mobility.

Functionality

The main function of the ilio-lumbar muscle (hereinafter referred to as the "APM") is to keep the trunk in an upright position, regulating its position in space, being at the same time the strongest flexor of the hip joints. Also, it attracts the hips to the body and rotates them outward, fixes the position of the kidneys in the right place.

In fact, this muscle is one of the most important in the structure of man, combining three important segments: legs, pelvis and trunk. Practitioners of yoga know about its paramount importance in the movement of a person, that's why they call it the "soul of the physical body."

Exercises from yoga for stretching

Stretching of the ilio-lumbar muscle is fairly simple to perform, but it must be done regularly to achieve a stable result.

  1. "Horseman": a deep backward thrust with your left foot, dropping your knee to the floor. Try as low as possible to lower the pelvis and thigh of the left leg to the floor while trying to keep the body strictly vertical or with a deflection back. For deeper stretching, you can bend the left leg in the knee and pull the heel to the right buttock, also trying to pull the spine upward.
  2. "Half-bridge": lying on his back resting on the feet of bent legs in the floor, raise the hips up to the pelvis line, directing the pubic bone on the sternum.
  3. Sitting with slightly bent legs (knees and feet together), put the trunk on the hips and try to push forward the lower ribs as far as possible, hands also stretching forward, trying to fold the body into two even lines. Legs can be straightened with time, provided tight contact of the hips and lower ribs.

The massage course can help to get rid of the basic muscle spasm, but as a long-term application becomes ineffective and turns into a permanent dependence on the master, stretching takes no more than 10 minutes and can be performed at any convenient time, practically anywhere.

What is dangerous about hypertonicity of the antiparallelisation?

Syndrome of ilio-lumbar muscle is a very common phenomenon among people who are sedentary and those whose work is associated with lifting heavy weights. Unfortunately, most doctors do not attach significant weight to this muscle, as a provoker of many diseases of a very different nature:

  • Hyperlordosis of the lumbar spine is almost always triggered by spasm of PPM, which is manifested by excessive lumbar deflection, inadequate strain on the intervertebral discs, which can lead to the formation of protrusions and hernias;
  • The spasm of APM squeezes the kidneys, causing them to shift from the place of nature, as a consequence - disruption of the blood and excretory systems;
  • Since the ilio-lumbar muscle is attached to the vertebrae in the thoracic and lumbar regions, its long uneven tone or spasm can lead to a curvature of the spine: scoliosis, while if the overvoltage is at different levels: from above and below, rotation is formed (twisting around the axis ) With a projection in the pelvis, possibly shortening one of the limbs;
  • Because of its deep arrangement, the muscle has a direct effect on the work of the abdominal organs, and the nerve endings that come out of this zone also affect these processes, so the treatment of diseases of the internal organs should begin with the elimination of the spasm of the APM.
  • - chronic spasm of the ilio-lumbar muscle exerts pressure on the hip joint zone, which violates its mobility and can lead to inflammation or degeneration of the joint.

Arthritis, arthrosis and coxarthrosis are diseases that could provoke hypertonia. An incorrect load on the hip joints will entail an overload of knee joints and ankle.

What provokes a shortening of this muscle?

Sedentary lifestyle, long cycling and skiing significantly affect the muscle spasm in this area. In the sports world, there are quite a few exercises that also shorten this zone: lifting the body with the legs fixed (in the school the standards for the press were often given in this way), straight leg lifts from the floor upwards, many exercises on the "sit" simulators.

The most common indicator of muscle hypertension is a stubby abdomen (weak muscles of the press), protruding lower ribs and passive gluteus muscles (these two main muscles are ileal-lumbar antagonists). Therefore, if it is necessary to correct the situation, then along with the extension of the PPM, it is necessary to strengthen these two sections, actively pumping them with the right exercises.
