A little about the writer

The writer began his creative activity with feuilletons, then the author creates more serious works: "Quiet Don", "Virgin Soil Upturned". Among his works on the war can be distinguished: "They fought for their Motherland", "Light and darkness", "The struggle continues." On the same topic and Sholokhov's story "The Fate of Man." The analysis of the first lines will help the reader to move mentally to that situation.

Acquaintance with Andrei Sokolov, who had a real prototype

The work begins with an acquaintance with the narrator. He was traveling on a britzka to the village of Bukhanovsky. Together with the driver crossed the river. The narrator had to wait 2 hours until the driver returned. It is located near the car of the brand "Willys" and wanted to smoke, but the cigarettes were raw.

The narrator saw a man with a child and approached him. It was the main character of the story - Andrei Sokolov. He thought that a man trying to smoke, as he is a driver, so he went to talk to a colleague.

This begins a small story Sholokhov, "The Fate of Man." Analysis of the dating scene will tell the reader that the story is based on real events. Mikhail Alexandrovich was on the hunt in the spring of 1946, and there he began to talk to a man who told him his fate. After 10 years, remembering about this meeting, Sholokhov wrote a story for a week. Now it is clear that the narrative is conducted on behalf of the author.

Biography of Sokolov

After Andrew treated the oncoming with dry cigarettes, they talked. Rather, Sokolov began to talk about himself. He was born in 1900 in the Voronezh province. During the Civil War fought in the Red Army.

In 1922 he went to the Kuban to somehow feed himself in this hungry time. But his whole family died - his father, sister and mother died of hunger. When Andrew returned from the Kuban to his homeland, he sold the house and went to the city of Voronezh. At first he worked here as a carpenter, and then as a mechanic.

Then he tells about a significant event in the life of his hero MA Sholokhov. "The fate of man" continues because the young man marries a good girl. She did not have Rodney, and she was brought up in an orphanage. As Andrey himself says, Irina was not a very special beauty, but it seemed to him that she was better than all the girls in the world.

Marriage and children

Irina's character was beautiful. When the young couple got married, sometimes the husband came home from work angry with fatigue, so he broke into his wife. But the clever girl did not respond to offensive words, but was with her husband affable and affectionate. Irina tried to feed him better, to meet her well. Having been in such a favorable situation, Andrei understood his wrong, asked forgiveness from his wife for his incontinence.

The woman was very compliant, did not scold her husband because he sometimes drank too much with his friends. But soon he stopped even occasionally to abuse alcohol, because young people had children. First a son was born, and a year later, two twin girls appeared. My husband began to bring the whole salary home, only occasionally allowed himself a bottle of beer.

Andrei learned to be a chauffeur, began to drive a truck, earn well - the family's life was comfortable.

War

So 10 years passed. Sokolov set themselves a new home, Irina bought two goats. Everything was fine, but the war began. It will bring a lot of grief to the family, make the lonely protagonist again. This was described in his almost documentary work by MA Sholokhov. "The fate of a man" continues a sad moment - Andrew was called to the front. Irina seemed to feel that there would be a big trouble. Seeing off the beloved, she cried on her husband's chest and said that they would not see him again.

Next Sokolov tells how in one of the battles he volunteered to take ammunition to his comrades, but the enemy shell that exploded near him contused the soldier. From the impact the joint on the arm was damaged.

In captivity

After some time, 6 German submachine gunners approached him, took him prisoner, but not his one. First the prisoners were led west, then ordered to stay overnight in the church. Here, Andrew was lucky - his hand was directed by a doctor. He walked among soldiers, asked if there were wounded and helped them. Such noble people were among Soviet soldiers and officers. But there were others. Sokolov heard how one person named Kryzhnev threatened another, saying that he would give it to the Germans. The traitor said that he would tell the opponents in the morning that among the prisoners there are communists, and they shot members of the CPSU. What further told Mikhail Sholokhov? "The fate of a man" helps to understand how indifferent even to someone else's misfortune was Andrei Sokolov.

Such an injustice the protagonist could not endure, he told the communist, who was platoon, that he kept Kryzhnev's feet and strangled the traitor.

But the next morning, when the Germans built the prisoners and asked whether there were commanders, communists, commissars among them, no one betrayed anybody, since there were no more traitors. But the Nazis shot four, very similar to the Jews. People of this nation they mercilessly exterminated in those hard times. About this, Mikhail Sholokhov knew. "The fate of a man" continues with the stories of Sokolov's two captive years. During this time, the protagonist was in many areas of Germany, he had to work for the Germans. He worked in the mine, at the silicate plant and elsewhere.

Sholokhov, "The Fate of Man." An excerpt showing the soldier's heroism

When not far from Dresden, along with other prisoners, Sokolov mined stones at his quarry, when he came to his hut, he said that the output is equal to three cubes, and each one is enough for the grave alone.

Someone gave these words to the Germans, and they decided to shoot a soldier. He was summoned to the command, but here Sokolov showed himself to be a real hero. This is clearly seen when you read about the tense moment in Sholokhov's story "The Fate of Man." The analysis of the next episode shows the fearlessness of a simple Russian person.

When the camp commandant Muller said that he would personally shoot Sokolov, he was not afraid. Muller suggested that Andrei drink for the victory of German weapons, did not become a Red Army man, but agreed for his death. The prisoner drank a glass of vodka for two sips, did not bite, which surprised the Germans. The second glass he drank the same way, the third - slower and bit a bit of bread.

Astonished, Mueller said that he gives such a brave soldier life and awarded him a loaf and bacon. Andrey took the food to the barracks so that the meal was divided equally. Sholokhov wrote about this in detail.

"The Fate of Man": a soldier's feat and irreplaceable loss

Since 1944, Sokolov began to work as a driver - he drove a German major. When the opportunity presented itself, Andrei rushed to his cars and brought as a trophy a major with valuable documents.

The hero was sent to receive medical treatment in the hospital. From there, he wrote a letter to his wife, but received an answer from a neighbor that Irina and her daughters were killed back in 1942 - a bomb hit the house.

One now only warmed the head of the family - his son Anatoly. He graduated with honors from the artillery school and fought in the rank of captain. But fate could be taken from a soldier and son, Anatoly died on Victory Day - May 9, 1945.

The named son

After the war Andrew Sokolov went to Uryupinsk - his friend lived here. Accidentally in the teahouse I met a sickly hungry orphan boy, Vanya, whose mother was dead. After thinking, after a while Sokolov told the child that he was his father. Very touchingly about this in his work Sholokhov ("The Fate of Man").

The author described the heroism of a simple soldier, telling about his military exploits, about the fearlessness, courage with which he met news about the death of native people. He will certainly raise and adoptive son as inflexible as himself, so that Ivan could endure and overcome everything on his way.
