The capital of Montenegro and its main attractions. Podgorica: the raisins of the city

What in the Montenegrin capital can be attractions? Podgorica, alas, rarely sees crowds of tourists on its streets. The city, perhaps, can be compared very successfully with Simferopol. Travelers arrive here by airplanes and, not delaying, go to the Adriatic coast.

Montenegrin capital and its sights. Podgorica is a city of old and new

Many pilgrims erroneously believe that in this city there is absolutely nothing interesting. The average and ignorant tourist will ask: what attractions can be here? Podgorica, however, is ready to pleasantly surprise the one who will give her a little attention.

It should be noted that the city suffered very badly during the Second World War. His quarters were subjected to air strikes at least 70 times! Of course, most of the historical buildings did not survive this. But even so, in Podgorica there are worthwhile and interesting sights.

Podgorica is one of the smallest European capitals. Here live about 185 thousand people. Curiously, this number corresponds to almost 30 percent of the total population of the country! Podgorica is surrounded on all sides by low hills. Almost from each of them there are picturesque views of the city.

The Montenegrin capital is quite diverse. Here, the old and the new are surprisingly combined: just now the tourist was walking along a narrow old street, when suddenly a modern building of glass and metal arose in front of him. Expensive stores of brand clothes and multistory "unfinished", colored fountains and lifeless wastelands - all this can be seen in the unusual capital of a young country.

Church of St. George

We offer a virtual walk through Podgorica and its surroundings, visiting the most famous sights of the Montenegrin capital.

One of the hills, towering over the city, is called Goritsa. It is not hard to guess where the "feet" from the Montenegrin capital come from. The village of Goritsa arose seven centuries ago.

On this hill the oldest building of Podgorica is preserved - the church of St. George. Scientists are still arguing about the date of its construction. Some call the IX century, others date it XI century. Outwardly simple and reserved church hides inside its main treasure - magnificent and colorful frescoes of the XVII century. Near the temple there is an ancient cemetery, which can also be interesting for tourists.

Fortress Dedogenogen

The next landmark belongs to the legacy of the once powerful Ottoman Empire, stretching its tentacles and to the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Powerful ruins, overgrown with bushes and grass, are impressive and at the same time bear in past eras.

The castle of Depedogen in Podgorica was built in the 15th century, with the arrival of the Ottoman authorities. The stronghold helped the Turks to restrain periodic raids on the city of unfriendly Serbs and Montenegrins. In the stronghold was stored a huge amount of ammunition, which was the reason for her death. In 1878 there was a terrible explosion that destroyed most of the fortress.

Next to the fortress Depepergen is the confluence of the rivers Rybnitsa and Moraca. Through Rybnitsa there is built a very beautiful and romantic stone bridge, on which you can always see lovers couples.

Other places of interest Podgorica

In the Montenegrin capital there are other interesting places and objects. For example, the so-called Millennium Bridge (or the Millennium Bridge), opened only recently - in 2005. It connects both banks of the river of Morachi. The bridge is very unusual in appearance and very photogenic. The length of the structure is 140 meters, and the maximum height is 57 meters.

On the bank of the already mentioned river there is another unique attraction. It is obligatory to visit all the indigenous inhabitants of the post-Soviet space. This is a monument to Vladimir Vysotsky - a famous bard, singer and actor. Vysotsky visited Podgorica twice - in 1974 and in 1975. Many are surprised by the fact that the pedestal of this monument has a small bronze skull. In this way, the authors of the monument recalled Vysotsky's magnificent performance of the role of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Skadar Lake (Montenegro) - the largest in the Balkans

Priceless natural pearl - Skadar Lake - is divided between two states. However, two thirds of this reservoir is located on the territory of Montenegro.

Today the lake is a national park, you can get into it for 4 euros. What historical monuments can a tourist enjoy Skadar Lake?

Montenegro, as you know, is rich in all sorts of monuments of antiquity. On the shore of the lake there are a lot of them. Here you can see the remains of ancient sites, ancient monasteries (Starchevo, Beska, Vranina and others), as well as the ruins of numerous fortresses built during the XIII-XIX centuries.

However, the main highlight of Skadar Lake is its nature. About 250 species of birds live here, and the waters are rich in fish. The flora of the shores of the lake is also very diverse.
