Tennis court: options. Construction of tennis courts

What is a court (tennis)? This is a flat, orthogonal platform, prepared for an old English tennis game.

Dimensions

Lines depicted along the long sides of the court are called lateral lines, along the short sides - back. Beyond the boundaries of the markup there is an additional space for moving players.

The length of the tennis court is 26 yards (23.78 m), the width is 12 yards (10.97 m) for paired competitions or 9 yards (8.23 m) - for singles.

In the middle of the tennis court the net is stretched. It divides it into two equal parts and is attached to the entire width of the court, parallel to the rear lines. The grid posts are located behind the side lines, at a range of one yard (914 mm). The height of the grid at the posts is 1 yard 6 inches (1.07 m), in the middle part, where it is attached to the court cover - 1 yard (914 mm). Its upper edge is marked with a white ribbon.

The court (tennis) is divided into feed areas using feed lines that are parallel to the grid and the rear lines: they are placed 7 yards from the grid and are drawn only between the side lines created for a single game. On the site there is also a center feed line, which is located in the middle of the court between the supply lines parallel to the side lines. The main feature is shown on the grid with a white vertical strip stretched from the surface of the playing field to its upper edge.

On the rear lines of the playground a small mark is placed, dividing them in half. All stripes drawn on the field are a part of it. If the ball touches the line, it is counted. It turns out that the outer edges of the court lines are its boundary.

Interesting Facts

It is known that in 1873 the principles of playing lawn tennis were patented by Major Wingfield. In those days, the court was created in the form of a clock: it was narrowed in the center, the height of the grid was 5 feet, from the base grid along the sides, lateral ones departed.

The court (tennis) changed its form in 1877: it became rectangular. The height of its grid and the distance from the feed line to the grid were irrevocably approved in 1882.

Coating

It is known that there are various types of coatings for courts: ground, grass, carpet, parquet, concrete, hard (court with a hard surface), wooden, asphalt, rubber. Coverage acts on bouncing the ball, so the policy of playing on tennis courts with different covers may differ radically.

Today among professional tennis players there is a large number of players showing their first-class game only on specific types of decking. At the same time they are satisfied with very insignificant achievements on others.

Green Courts

The herbal court (tennis) was used for tennis since its appearance. The name lawn tennis originated from the English word lawn, which translates as "lawn, lawn". The sites of this species differ in that their parameters can vary depending on the condition of the grass. Of all types of courts, it is on them that the ball can bounce low and quickly off the surface.

Usually, in competitions on grassy fields, an advantage is considered to be a powerful pitch and a game in the spirit of serve and volley (giving the ball, after which the player immediately leaves to the grid).

The Wimbledon tournament is usually held on grass courts. The strongest players on the platforms of this kind are usually considered tennis players from the UK and Australia.

Ground courts

To create a flooring of ground courts, mixtures of sand, clay, stone or crushed brick are used, often with the addition of rubber or plastic chips. The ground area always has a dark green or reddish-brown color.

Such courts have always been considered the most inhibited, with high ricochet of the ball. Of course, and the pace of the game on them is the slowest, with long raffles. On the ground, tennis players practice sliding when moving on it and at the time of strikes.

On the courts of this kind always organize an open championship of France. The most successful players in these fields are usually athletes from South America, France and Spain.

Hard-surface areas

What are the courts with solid flooring? They are very fast, but the speed of ricochet of the ball on them is less than on grass areas. The construction of tennis courts of this kind differs a special specificity: their base can be made of asphalt or concrete, which are covered from above with a colored synthetic layer giving some properties to the ball rebound.

Ricochet can be modified in height and speed in different types of hard coating. Some varieties of coatings have acquired their own names: Rebound Ace, Plexipave, TeraFlex, DecoTurf, AC Play (Russia).

On such venues, the US open championship (decoTurf decking) and open Australian championship (Plexicushion flooring) are held. It is interesting that both events were first conducted on grass courts.

In general, such coverings are called "hard". Their materials are aqueous acrylic compositions. The flooring can consist of 3, 4, and even 12 layers, performing a variety of functions: color finishing layers, leveling the base and softening.

Platforms with carpet flooring

Courts with carpet flooring - this is a kind of solid foundation, covered with artificial carpet. Here the properties of the rebound of the ball differ depending on the structure, thickness and raw materials from which the carpet is made.

Since these sites have a softer surface than the courts with hard flooring, the pace of play on them is slightly lower. Such playing fields are usually erected inside buildings, but there are also courts with synthetic grass that can be placed both inside buildings and in open space.

On courts with a carpet covering tennis players compete, for example, for the Kremlin Cup.

Other types of decking

There are other types of tennis court surfaces, for example, wooden, asphalt or rubber coatings. Unfortunately, at the official level, competitions are not held for them.

Building

Many companies are building turn-key tennis courts. They provide a full range of services, listen to all the wishes of the client, develop a design project, install the necessary equipment, and install lighting.

These firms offer impressive collections of specific coverage for playgrounds: synthetic grass has a different pile height, density and color. That's why even the most picky client will be able to choose a flooring that meets all the requirements.

After the customer chooses the cover, the company begins to prepare the base, install a drainage system, lay engineering communications, lay down all the necessary details for sports equipment. To build a tennis court is not difficult, the main thing is to fulfill the following requirements:

  • The base must be perfectly even and prepared.
  • Between the coating and the substrate, ideal adhesion is ideally ensured.
  • Specialists must strictly withstand building bias.
  • The flooring must be solid and not have cracks.

Today it is easy to find a company that will create a small court in the courtyard of an apartment building or build a professional indoor tennis court.

Typical values of courts

It is known that the area of the tennis court, its all geometric dimensions are regulated by international norms. Of course, the strict requirements are mainly related to professional courts, but for personal tennis fields it is desirable to adhere to the required standards.

In particular, the standard parameters of the courts are as follows:

  • Between the outer edges of the lateral lines: 10.92 m;
  • Between the outer edges of the main lines: 23.75 m;
  • Width of flank races: 3,6 m (for amateurish courts this parameter can be reduced to 3 m);
  • Depth of the mortgage created for tennis racks: 0,9 m;
  • On the back line the length of the races: 6.4 m (for amateur courts this parameter can be reduced to five meters);
  • The distance of the holes between the tennis posts made for the embedded arms is 12.8 m;
  • Round clearance under the anchor of the main belt has such parameters: diameter - 0.45 mm, depth - 20.5 cm.

Dimensions of gradient and evenness

Tennis courts are built in many cities of Russia! Center, courts, a lot of players hurrying to practice - these are the signs of a real sports megacity! But we will continue to study the parameters of tennis courts. The parameters of flatness and slope are also of great importance. So, the surface should have a slope of at least 0.6% and not more than 1.2%. Such grades of slope provide good drainage and are mandatory for creation on all open courts. By the way, permissible deviations in the evenness are 3 mm for every three meters of length. It should be noted that there is another size - 4 mm by 4 meters: such values are considered to be flawless. On an amateur tennis court this indicator is almost unattainable.

Today, tennis courts are created both in indoor buildings and in open space. Covering both the zoning zones and the site should be the same. Surface preparation always depends on the type of flooring. It is known that ground and grass courts require a drainage device.

The width of the tennis court, and the rest of its parameters, must comply with international standards. Do you need to orient the site around the world? If you can choose, the open area should be oriented to the south-north (on the long side). This arrangement ensures the most favorable feelings for athletes when playing on a sunny day.
