Sukhanovo Manor: address, photo, history

Sukhanovo Manor was erected at the end of the seventeenth century. Subsequently, it was donated by Peter the Great to N. Streshnev - the tsarist ardent supporter. Then the estate passed into the possession of Dmitriev-Mamonov, who later married the tsar's niece, Praskovya Ioannovna.

Features

Sukhanovo Estate is a classic example of natural gardens that were popular in the eighteenth century. It is noteworthy that it carefully preserves the memory of the great Russian figures, literally changing the course of history. One of the characteristic features of the estate is the presence of a mausoleum temple, which became the site of the last refuge of its former owners. The main part of the park is separated from the mausoleum by a massive bridge made of stone. This building symbolizes the transition from one world to another. Overhanging trees over the water evoke memories of the past days and make you think about the meaning of life on this earth.

New owners - Volkonskie

In 1804 the estate Sukhanovo was in the possession of the princes of Volkonsk. They were the masters of these lands for more than a century - until 1917. Many buildings were renovated and significantly altered thanks to the efforts of Elena Volkonskaya and her nephew. The latter held the post of Chief of the General Staff of Alexander I, and during the reign of Nicholas I became Minister of the Court. PM Volkonsky was engaged in attracting the most outstanding Russian architects to the design process of the estate.

Time of heyday

The final formation of the architectural appearance of Sukhanov took place at the end of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It was for this period that the heyday of the manor came. PM Volkonsky, who held the post of Minister of the Court and head of the process of building public buildings, could attract such high-class masters of his craft as Charlemagne, Rossi, etc. to the construction of the estate. Unfortunately, some of the projects were never realized, some of the erected buildings were not Preserved or lost the original architectural appearance.

A little bit about architectural elements

The 1820s were marked by the appearance of office buildings with pseudo-Gothic features - battlements and turrets, and in the 1830s - guest houses in the classical style.

The park facade of the main building is decorated with a six-columned portico. From it are opened the most beautiful views of the village, located on the high opposite shore. At the end of one of the shady avenues there is a gazebo under the romantic name "Temple of Venus", and then you can reach the arch bridge, which is thrown across the ravine and leads to one of the most interesting places of the estate - the mausoleum. On the way to it, a bronze sculpture of a girl holding a broken jug is installed. This is a copy of PP Sokolov's most famous work. The original is located on the territory of the Tsarskoye Selo Park. This sculpture was admired by Pushkin. The poet expressed his delight in poetic form.

More about the mausoleum

This structure appeared in 1813. It was built over the crypt, in which the spouse of E. A. Volkonskaya, Prince D. P. Volkonsky, was buried. He died of wounds sustained in the war of 1812. This is a round-shaped building. The western part of the mausoleum is decorated with a strict Doric portico. Two altars of cast iron in Empire style are set on the stairs. Initially, the structure was joined by a semicircular open colonnade with a bell tower and a small wing. More recently, it was possible to find design documents of this structure, which allowed to establish the name of the architect. The author was the architect Stasov, famous for such works as the Arc de Triomphe in the northern capital and Pavlovsky barracks on the Champ de Mars.

Subsequently, the estate Sukhanovo changed many times. The history of this place includes the fact of the cardinal change of the Volkonsky mausoleum - the most beautiful example of the capital's Empire. As a result of the alterations of 1934, the masterpiece was simply ruined.

The main house was built in the late eighteenth century. Works on its reorganization were carried out in 1945 (the process was carried out under the guidance of architect Kokorin). Before this alteration, the changes were made many times. Thus, at the end of the nineteenth century columns and porticos were added, as well as galleries on the sides of the building, which ended in wings. In the forties of the same century, the gallery was decided to close, while a residential floor was erected above the right one. Once the church adjoined this building, but it was destroyed in the 1930s.

Current state of affairs

Sukhanovo Manor is still a valuable monument of the national landscape architecture and architecture. Today, on the grounds of the estate, a rest house belonging to the Union of Architects is organized. Unfortunately, the unique object is gradually being destroyed.
