SR-3 "Whirlwind": specifications and photos

SR-3 "Whirlwind" is a small-sized submachine gun developed by specialists of the Klimovsk enterprise TsNIITOCHMASH in 1994. Upgrading of the image was carried out until 1996, when the production of weapons was put on the conveyor.

History of development

At the end of the 1980s, security officials needed a new compact model of small arms, which would open the way for carrying out power actions in cramped conditions. Another condition was the possibility of effective defeat of opponents dressed in body armor.

In the 90s, the order to manufacture weapons was taken by domestic designers VN Levchenko and AD Borisov, who worked on the development of new types of weapons in the Moscow region of Klimovsk. Very soon the inventors presented a shortened, almost noiseless version of the machine, created on the basis of the popular model of the AS "Val". The new sample was designed to fire fire cartridges of 9 mm caliber armor-piercing series SP-6.

After several years of testing weapons, FSB officers officially accepted the model for service. For high rate of fire and compactness, the machine was called SR-3 "Vortex". Later, a modification of the model was developed, which received the designation SR3M. The latter retained the main advantages of the previous version and opened up wide possibilities for additional equipment with advanced removable optics, compact collimator sights.

SR-3 "Whirlwind" is a weapon intended for firing in extremely limited space. This explains the realization of an extremely compact design.

The sample is indispensable for users who need to secretly transport an automatic weapon under their clothes. Therefore, members of paramilitary special forces, employees of security agencies, representatives of organizations for combating terrorism and organized crime often resort to its use.

Design Features

The design of SR-3 "Vortex" in many respects repeats the features of assembling its prototype - the AS "Val" model. The gas automatic system has been successfully implemented here. Locking the barrel is made with the help of a bolt for 6 warheads. The design of the drummer is also performed in a manner similar to the basic version of the machine. All this opens up the possibility for the production of rounds both continuous and single bursts.

SR-3 "Vortex" has a divided translator and fuse. The first is located behind the trigger. As for the two-way fuse, the element is placed on the receiver.

Replacing the handle of the shutter in the construction of the machine serve several engines, which are installed above the forearm. The latter are delayed manually using the fingers.

The application of the machine is folded upwards, and then forward. Made of lightweight stamped steel. The fore and the hilt of automatic weapons are made of high-strength plastic that can withstand high impact loads.

Trunk

In comparison with the base sample, the automatic machine SR-3 "Vortex" does not contain holes in the barrel for exhaust gas discharge during long bursts. Developers also do not provide for the possibility of completing the machine with a silencer. However, the barrel is equipped with a compensating flame arrester, which protects the weapon from overheating of the barrel during the fire in the queues.

Barrel notches are realized with variable steepness. This solution has made it possible to significantly improve the accuracy of shooting and stabilize the stability of the trajectory of the flight of cartridges.

Sights

In the basic assembly, the machine is equipped with a sighting device in the form of a front sight. The weapon is equipped with a two-position caster of the change-over type, which is placed on the cover of the receiver. If necessary, SR-3 "Vortex" can be supplemented with a collimator sight.

Modification

The main variation of the CP-3 Vortex automatic is the CP-3M model. The automatic machine differs from the base sample by the presence of the cocking cock located on the right side of the shutter frame. The safety element is also located on the right side of the housing.

The SR-3M application is characterized by a lightweight, skeletal structure. It conveniently folds sideways with the secret transport of weapons. The foreve contains an additional built-in handle, which makes it possible to reliably fix the weapon in the hands while firing with long bursts.

The left side of the receiver contains mountings for mounting a specialized bracket, which opens the possibility of a weapon assembly with night vision devices and sighting optics. On the muzzle part there is a coupling where a quick-detachable silencer joins.

Model CP-3M can be used with metal magazines with a capacity of 30 rounds and 10 or 20-charge chamber made of plastic.

Currently, the model is one of the most common, widely in demand samples of automatic weapons around the world. Development is successfully used not only by domestic law enforcement agencies, but also by the militarized structures of Western countries.
