Spassky Church (Tyumen): history, description

Tyumen is considered the oil and gas capital of Russia and the first Russian city in Siberia. A Spassky church, located in the heart of the village (Spasskaya Street, in a new Lenin, 43), is its main attraction. The temple is a shrine, one of the earliest and most expressive architectural monuments of federal significance, which combines the style of the Siberian Baroque (late 18th century) and pseudo-Russian style (early XX).

The Church of the Savior: Tyumen. History

If you turn to one of the Siberian chronicles (Kungur), which arose in the first half of the XVII century in the Kama region, you can read there that the Church of the Savior was built of wood when laying the Tyumen Kremlin in 1586. In the fire of 1687, the temple burned down. But after it was again rebuilt. However, over the course of a hundred years, he was constantly destroyed by fire. That is why it was decided to erect a new stone church.

The beginning of the construction was blessed by the Archbishop of Tobolsk and the Siberian Varlaam. In 1794 a two-story church was laid. In 1797 the lower floor was consecrated in honor of the icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin. The second tier was built for many years and completed only by 1819. His main throne was consecrated in honor of the Savior Not Made by Hands.

So gradually the Spassky Church (Tyumen) grew. The description of historical events includes the fact that the acting kings did not attend it, except for the future emperor Alexander II. He came here in 1837 with his teacher - the poet V. Zhukovsky.

In 1892 the parish school was opened at the church. In the late autumn of 1898, Father Alexander (Fokin), the rector of the church, initiated the construction of a new two-story building for the school. On the device it was divided into two halves: for the female and male departments. In 1896, at Spassky parish with the assistance of the teacher A. Komogortseva, a school was opened where literacy was taught to poor people living in brick barns on Ostrozhskaya Street.

Limits of the Church

In 1914, the construction of the northern limit began with the funds of the church elder's merchant A.Tkutyev. It housed two thrones. The first floor was consecrated in honor of St. Prp. Andrew of Crete and St. The martyrs of Evdokia, the second - in honor of St. John of Tobolsk and St.. Prp. Sergius of Radonezh. In 1916, the year of the death of merchant Tekutyev, the construction was completed.

Already later the main western façade and the terminal temple were united by a two-storeyed annex, made in the pseudo-Russian style. Then the parish included the villages of Kopytov, Komarov, Paderin. Over time, the Spassky Church significantly expanded its holdings. Tyumen, however, stood on the verge of new tests. At the church there was also a bell tower, which existed until 1930, which was later disassembled by the Bolsheviks.

Years of decline: The Church of the Savior, Tyumen

The photos presented in the article show the beauty of the cathedral in our time. But there was a period when he did not act. It is no secret that after the revolution the worst times for the churches began. Spassky was no exception. In the early 20-ies all the property was taken from the temple, including 4 poods and 6 pounds of silver. But even after such a ruthless robbery, parishioners came to the church, which numbered up to 1500 people.

And yet in 1929 the Spassky church was closed. Tyumen this event stirred. Believers wanted to defend the temple. They appealed to the city council, but all is in vain. The priests, Ilie Populov and Alexei Tobolkin, were accused of criminality, as they entered the temple and, having torn off the seal of the administration, stole nine icons and candles. In 1930, the old church building became a hostel. It was under the protection of the People's Commissariat of Education. That is why it was preserved in the original form and still.

Architectural monument

But soon the Spassky church revived: Tyumen remembers this event to this day. In 1945, the faithful were not afraid and again asked the authorities to return the temple to them. Again there was a refusal. In 1950, there were stored city archives of the NKVD, the MGB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. In 1960 the building was included in the register of monuments of architecture of local monumental creativity. It was taken under state protection. In 1982, it housed the funds and library of the museum of local lore.

A complete restoration of the church was carried out in the spring of 2004 under the leadership of the then governor S. Sobyanin. Now stands in a new decoration and consecrates the city with its grace the majestic and beautiful Spassky church. Tyumen without it can not imagine any townspeople.
