Sights of Murmansk: monuments, temples, museums and parks. Local History Museum of Murmansk

There are many beautiful cities in the world that deserve the attention of tourists. Murmansk can be added to their list. Despite the fact that he once won his popularity thanks to his port, there is something to see.

Main street of the city

The sights of Murmansk are located almost throughout the city, but guests are advised to start the inspection of this settlement from the main street - from Lenin Avenue, which stretches for almost four kilometers. It starts from the intersection with Kirov Avenue and ends at the beginning of Papanin Street. Here are all the administrative buildings and some of the city monuments. It is from this street you can get to the main square "Five Corners". It is here that all the festivities take place. In its center there is a large round flower bed, on which a New Year tree is set in winter.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

The sights of Murmansk are first of all city architecture. The first building in this village was built in 1916. It is a wooden church in honor of the patron sailor Nikolai Mirlikiy. At the end of the 20th century, on the site of this church appeared St. Nicholas Cathedral. Its ensemble consists of several buildings, among which the temple of Trifon of Pechenga, the chapel of the icon of the Mother of God "Sporite of loaves", several administrative buildings. The complex includes a number of residential and household buildings. The appearance of the buildings has a rude silhouette. All walls are built of silicate bricks, including the main gate. The only building made of wood is the chapel.

Other temples of the city

The temples of Murmansk can be supplemented by an inspection of such a structure as the Cathedral of All Saints. He towers at the intersection of the streets of Skalnaya and Maklakova. Nearby is the source. If you go to Pechengskaya Street, then you can see the St. George Church, which proudly rises among the gray houses. It is recommended to visit the Novostolic Church, located on the street of the Polar Division, and the All-Vyatka Church, which is located on Skalnaya Street. A beautiful structure is also the Panteleimonovskaya church, located in Tersky Lane.

Orthodox Church of the Savior-on-the-Waters

Continuing to consider the sights of Murmansk of a religious nature, one can not help but recall the Marine Orthodox Church of the Savior-on-the-Waters, which proudly rises on a hill from which a superb view of the city opens. The church was built on donations from residents in 2002. This building was the third temple in the city. It is built in the Old Russian style and is a single-domed church with an attached bell tower. The interior of the church, decorated with bright colors, the iconostasis, which is made of linden, attracts attention. One of the unique features of the temple, which immediately catches your eye, is a glazed belfry. This is due to the fact that, according to experts, in the Far North this is the only way by which 9 bells of the temple can be protected from icing.

Catholic Church

Attractions of Murmansk include in its list and such a magnificent structure, as the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, located 7 kilometers south of the central part of the city, on Dostoevsky Street. This is the only Catholic church on the Kola Peninsula. It was built in 2007, almost at the very entrance to Murmansk. The complex consists of a temple building, premises for parishioners, administration buildings and communal premises for the servants of the church.

Local History Museum

Murmansk, in addition to its architectural structures, is famous for its huge number of interesting places, including the Museum of Local Lore. It is 600 meters to the north-east of the "Five Corners" Square, on Lenin Avenue. He was placed in a bulky four-story building. It is considered the main museum of the Kola Peninsula. Here are collected excellent collections, which are presented for review of visitors. In the museum, as in most local lore museums of other cities, you can see a stone ax of the primitive man, the jaws of a mammoth, ancient samovars and spinning wheels and much more. But before you stop at the exposition, I want to give a little attention to the history of the museum.

The Museum of Local History of Murmansk is the oldest on the peninsula. It was founded in October 1926 by Vasily Alimov and Herman Klugoy. Then there was only one exposition devoted to the 10th anniversary of the Soviet power. Currently, there are 17 exhibition halls in the building. But interesting exhibits can be seen in the corridor, too, as temporary photo exhibitions on various topics are hung on the walls. Particular attention is attracted by a small installation located in the very center of the lobby: the model of the world's first nuclear icebreaker Arktika. For modern youth it will be almost incomprehensible, but it will tell a lot for those who were born in Soviet times. The greater part of the second floor is devoted to the mineralogical collection. In addition to various minerals, there is an exhibition of crafts from them - from ordinary written sets to the "Constitution of the USSR" made of stone. A significant part of one of the walls is dedicated to the Kola superdeep well. The pride of local taxidermists is the central hall, located on the second floor. A little further you can see a dry aquarium, telling about the inhabitants of the Barents Sea. A special attention of tourists is attracted by the model of the wooden fortress of the Kola prison.

Port

But the above interesting places and facilities - this is not the whole of Murmansk. The sights, the photos of which are presented here, can not fully convey the attractiveness of this locality. There is one tourist attraction that the city owes its appearance to - a port located along the eastern coast of the Kola Bay. It was to the port of the city of Murmansk that the railway was pulled, in the war years it was protected from the enemy. It was also called "The Gate of the Arctic". It is attributed to the barque "Sedov", as well as all nuclear icebreakers in Russia. The neighbor of the commercial port is the Marine Station, which is a two-story building, built in 1954. The Russian flag is mounted on the spire. On the ground floor there are cash desks for long-distance tickets, which is carried by the motor ship "Claudia Elanskaya". There is a small waiting room. Near the building there are ship repair shops, and then - the Murmansk sea fishing port.

City monuments

The monuments of Murmansk deserve attention. The main symbol of the city is the memorial "Alyosha", established in the Leninsky district. Originally it was planned to be installed on the central square "Five Angles", but then the management decided that the best option for its placement would be the hill of the Green Cape. The opening of the monument took place in 1974. He is a figure of a soldier, dressed in a cloak-tent, with an automatic weapon on his shoulder. The height of only one pedestal reaches 7 meters, and the monument rises to 35.5 m. Near the monument is installed a stele, and behind it - two anti-aircraft guns. The most emotionally strong is the monument to Anatoly Bredov, installed at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and the Trade Union Street. This monument describes a specific story, according to which machine gunners, who took a comfortable position, despite the onslaught of enemies, ready to fight until the last breath. Among the numerous monuments can be identified a memorial to fishermen and merchant ships that died in the war years. Similar monuments are installed throughout the city: the dead builders, the dead port workers, etc. In addition to the military, there are also "civilian" monuments in the city, among which there is a monument to the icebreaker Ermak.

Other attractions

The city of Murmansk is famous for other interesting places, among which you can mention the Oceanarium, located on the northern shore of Semyonov Lake. It is called the most northern complex, where the training and demonstration performances of pinnipeds are held. Here you can see gray and harp seals, sea hare, fur seal. The bridge over the Kola Bay, which is considered the longest in the world, deserves attention. Its length is 2.5 kilometers. You can visit the Murmansk Regional Palace of Culture named after Kirov, built in 1932.
