Sights of Bobruisk: it is better to see once ...

Before proceeding to the story about the sights of Bobruisk and the Bobruisk District, it is worth paying attention to the city itself, its inhabitants and its history.

Statistics

Bobruisk is one of the largest regional cities of Belarus. It is the district center of the Mogilev region, located on the territory of the Central Berezinsky plain. The territory of the district is spread over a weakly hilly terrain, where there is a dense network of rivers and canals. Bobruisk is a historical and cultural center with an area of more than 90 square kilometers. According to different statistics, the city's population is from 215 to 218 thousand inhabitants.

City `s history

During the existence of Kievan Rus on the site of the city was a settlement, then turned into a small village. There are historical records relating to the beginning of the 6th century.

The first mention of the city of Bobruisk dates back to 1387. Then this territory was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The city got its name due to the mass hunting - hunting for beavers. The population of the then Bobruisk survived due to beaver hunting and fishing. Eventually, Bobruisk became a volost. Later in the city was built a castle, which burned down in 1649. The sights of Bobruisk of those years did not reach contemporaries.

To the Russian Empire the city passed in 1792, and in 1795 Bobruisk became a district town of the Minsk province.

During the entire period of the city's existence, its names and appearance changed. From Bobrovsk, Bobrueska, Bobruseka, the city gradually turned into Bobruisk.

Modern Bobruisk

The modern appearance of Bobruisk is a combination of monumentality and austerity of multi-storey buildings with a unique color of the buildings of the old city. Part of the rich and diverse cultural and historical heritage are cozy old mansions, houses and wooden houses. This is only a small part of the history of Bobruisk.

The cultural and historical heritage and sights of Bobruisk are protected by Belarus as state values. All of them are protected by law and are under the protection of the country. Any criminal act aimed at the destruction, destruction and desecration of the national heritage of the city, is punishable in the form of criminal or administrative liability under the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.

The sights of Bobruisk are 179 monuments of architecture, 20 monuments of art, 1 archaeological site, 63 historical monuments, 15 memorial plaques.

Bobruisk fortress

Among all this, a special place is occupied by the main historical center of the city - the Bobruisk fortress. This is a unique structure, relating to the defensive architecture of the XIX century. According to archival data, the construction of this fortress began in 1810. Bobruisk fortress in those days was the largest and most massive defensive point of the Russian Empire. Its construction was not delayed for many years, and by 1812 it completely corresponded to the project of Karl Opperman, the chief architect of the structure.

This is the only fortress in Russia that survived and did not surrender after Napoleon's army. It is famous for the fact that Bagration's army held back the pressure of the French troops. It was there that the future Decembrist officers passed their service. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the fascist troops captured the city, fortified in the citadel. And the building itself was turned into a concentration camp. After the war the building was badly damaged, but it was preserved. Reconstruction works are underway now. In 2002, after the Bobruisk fortress, the official title of a monument of history and culture of the republican and world importance was fixed.

St. Nicholas Cathedral

St. Nicholas Cathedral is a historical monument. Primarily it was built in 1600 year. It was reconstructed in the future and consecrated in 1894. This is the oldest Orthodox building in the city. Always residents of the city considered Nicholas the Wonderworker their patron. Therefore St. Nicholas Cathedral not only enters the sights of Bobruisk, but also is the center of the spiritual life of the city. After 2002, the building was reconstructed and shone in its original form.

Selishche and the Museum of Local Lore

The main monument of archeology in the city is Selishche, discovered for the first time in 1978. It is located on the territory of the Bobruisk District on the left bank of the Bobruisky River. Among the excavations were found objects of ancient use. The most valuable find is a copper coin of the Roman Empire of the times of Marcus Aurelius. All found treasures of historical significance are in another sightseeing place in Bobruisk - in the National Museum of Local History of the city. It is there that all the valuable exhibits found on the territory of the city and district are collected. The whole exposition is a story about the history of the region's development, presented in the form of records, photos, drawings, household items, national and ethnographic suits, documents.

Memorial to the Heroes

There is a memorial complex in the city, recreated on the site of the death of Major-General Bakhrov B.S. In 1944. His division liberated the city of Bobruisk from the fascist invaders. At this place is a monument-tank. This is a real T-34, with a cannon caliber of 76 millimeters. The stars on the trunk of the tank speak of the number of destroyed enemy units. There they are 10. Next to the memorial sign are the burial places of fighters who died for the freedom of Bobruisk. In 1958, alongside the tank, obelisks were installed. In 2005, the memorial complex and Victory Square were reconstructed, where it was installed. Residents of the city and the country are honored and remember their heroes.

Historical and spiritual sights of Bobruisk

Not all the important places we described. Part of the architectural structure of the city is the sights of Bobruisk. Of these, a number of houses are 19th century art objects that once belonged to merchant Katznelson and her family.

There are many churches and cathedrals, synagogues and churches in the city. Residents of the city have always been spiritual and religious people, especially in ancient times. The sights of such a plan include:

Once upon a time, Bobruisk was a city where the majority of the population was Jewish. Alas, in 1988 a massive resettlement began, and almost all of them went abroad, taking with them a piece of history.

Positive

There are also the sights of Bobruisk, reviews about which are only positive emotions. These include three memorable signs:

  • Monument to the Beaver.
  • Monument to the Beaver on the bench.
  • The monument to Shura Balaganova.

The first two fun and symbolic objects are dedicated to the very Beaver who is in the Local History Museum of the city.

These are favorite places for tourists and local residents, convenient for photos.

A monument to Shura Balaganov at the former water tower is dedicated to Ilf and Petrov's famous book The Golden Calf, where there is a mention of Bobruisk. This is one of the most positive monuments of the city.

Once in this city, even accidentally, one can not ignore the sights of Bobruisk, connected with different events and the history of the whole country. There are a lot of them, and stories about them will not convey that energy and the perception of touching history as a sensation of real vision. Guests are always welcome to Bobruisk. In the city there is something to see, what to visit, where to stay for a rest.
