Restoration of cars: features, nuances and price

Restoration of retro cars implies a very complex and lengthy process, which is carried out according to special requirements and with the use of expensive tools. As a result of these works, the machine looks like it just left the conveyor. Due to its complexity, the restoration of cars can only be done professionally. It is hardly possible to provide such quality of works with your own hands.

Types of jobs

To date, two types of works are known, often used for retro cars:

  1. True restoration.
  2. Simplified.

What each of these types of work implies is described in the following sections.

True Restoration

It is also called "real", and implies the return to the car of a true appearance with the removal of all later overlaps. However, true restoration is not used very often due to its high cost. Judge for yourself, after all to find original spare parts for the car which has been removed from manufacture more 50 years ago, sometimes it is not obviously possible even for huge money. Therefore, such services are ordered from special masters.

But even with the required amount of money, it is not always possible to ensure the speed with which these works are performed. In order to make the original spare part, you need to first find out the exact year of production of the vehicle and its initial equipment. Thus, the true restoration of cars includes a number of works, which consists not only in the painting of the body, but also in the search and replacement of original spare parts.

Simplified restoration

But to get the initial appearance of the machine can and with minor changes. Partly such units as the engine and gearbox can be assembled from parts of other cars. Simplified restoration is very popular among collectors of the middle class. And since they constitute the majority, this kind of work is much more popular than the above. But there are minuses here too. The main disadvantage of simplified restoration is that after carrying out all the necessary restoration work the car will not be called a retro car. Often, experienced collectors apply for such instances the terms "hot rod" or "caste". And all because the simplified restoration of cars is less demanding of the original spare parts and details. Accordingly, it is more popular among collectors.

Restoration of old cars - the main stages

Most often at the initial stage, the base of the machine - the frame is being finalized. If the latter is not seriously damaged, then immediately you can proceed to the restoration of the body. At the same time, all attachments are completely removed from the machine. The body is carefully inspected for deformation and corrosion. If they are found, all cracks and damages are eliminated by professional welding and putty. In some cases, the condition of the metal body is so bad that it is necessary to look for donors - cars of the same brand. Then follows the procedure for painting. The machine is fully prepared, then primed and applied to its surface in several layers of paint.

It is worth noting that in Russia it is very difficult to find even similar parts for retro cars. If in the countries of Western Europe for this purpose entire departments have already been created for a long time, we often have to make "original" parts from a familiar turner, milling machine or locksmith.

How are cars restored? After the procedure for painting the place of welded joints and joints, an additional procedure for anticorrosion treatment is carried out. This will preserve the original look of the car for several years.

But this does not stop the restoration of cars. With such details as engines, transmission and running system come as we described earlier - either for these elements are similar to "donors", or they are made to order. Restoration of the car's interior is also a difficult process. Here, too, every trifle moves and is made to order. Restoration of cars with their own hands in this case, by force, perhaps only the most patient collector.

What do we get as a result?

As a result of these works, we get a real retro exhibit, which can be proudly shown at world exhibitions. But even recently this vehicle could be compared to a rusty trough. Thus, during the restoration, the car is subjected not only to tuning, but also to major repairs.

Very often, collectors do not stand such tests, because in addition to huge cash deposits, it will take a lot of patience (after all, work is sometimes delayed for 6-10 months). In this regard, many simply leave the race, and those who have stood the test of time, in the end receive unique cars, the number of which is probably less than 10 copies.

How much does it cost?

As we noted earlier, this procedure is sometimes unavailable even for wealthy car owners. Very often in order to restore the car in all parameters, you have to spread from 50 to 100 thousand dollars. And the less often the brand of the car, the more expensive it will cost. If this "Mercedes", the number of which is not more than 50 copies in the world, naturally, the price of work can be estimated in millions of dollars. Well, if this is some old VAZ, spare parts for which you can find and to this day in any city, you will take no more than 1-1.5 thousand dollars. In this case, the machine looks really like a conveyor.
