Positional (postural) drainage in bronchopulmonary pathologies: efficacy and procedure technique

Conducted clinical studies deepened the study of places of accumulation of pathological secretion in different zones of the bronchopulmonary system. In the process of laboratory experiments, scientists found that positional (postural) drainage helps to reduce the outflow of purulent fluid in patients with respiratory diseases.

The inclusion of this technique in complex therapy can reduce the number of serious complications, the timing of treatment, prevent the formation of bedsores and fatal cases. The developed technique of purifying the respiratory system, as medical practice shows, is absolutely safe and entails positive dynamics. It can be used in children from two years old, but only on the prescription of a pediatrician or physiotherapist.

The importance of therapeutic massage

First of all, it is necessary to understand what is postural drainage. This is a medical procedure that allows you to remove pathological fluid from tissues with special tapping, stroking and patting. Its importance becomes clear after careful observation of the patient, who is being given such a massage. In one session, the patient can cough up to 200 ml of sputum with an unpleasant odor.

Hence it is clear that the purulent exudate was previously in the trachea and caused terrible intoxication. The developed method of outflow of secretion significantly improves the ventilation of the segments of the lungs, reduces the occurrence of hypostatic pneumonia, facilitates blood flow and the function of respiration. The use of therapeutic manipulations with various pathologies of the abdominal cavity surpasses the traditional methods of drainage in terms of the rate of excretion of difficultly separated and purulent sputum.

Postural drainage: indications and procedure procedure

Special exercises are prescribed for patients with the following diseases:

- pneumonia;

- bronchitis;

- cystic fibrosis;

- bronchiectasis and other chronic pathologies of the respiratory tract.

As described above, the therapeutic procedure removes the formed mucus from the trachea, causing a productive cough and muscle contractions of the bronchi. Only when these criteria are strictly observed sputum is observed. Postural drainage is carried out in all medical centers. Everyone can master the technique of exercises.

But before carrying out it is necessary to liquefy mucus with the help of mucolytic preparations and alkaline drink. The procedure time, body position and intensity of performance for the adult and the child vary. It is important to adhere strictly to the instructions to see positive progress in the therapy of bronchopulmonary diseases.

Training Technology

Postural drainage is carried out in three variations: on the abdomen, back, side. The position is chosen by the therapist. You can apply all the poses with the permission of the doctor. The patient should lie on a flat solid surface, under the knees to slip a pillow or blanket so that the head is below the spine.

  • Lubricate the hands with oil or cream and begin to make rhythmic movements along the back (up / down) for about 30 seconds.
  • Then we rub the area of the shoulder blades and ribs, gradually accelerating the rhythm. After three minutes, when the back is warmed up well, we proceed to patting movements (fold the palm-shaped hand) from sides to the vertebral column - from both sides.
  • After all manipulations, massage the sternum for a better outflow of mucus.
  • After completing the cycle of exercises, we ask the patient to take a deep breath and cough very much so that the collected liquid in the trachea leaves.

It is recommended to carry out a set of therapeutic cleansing sessions 2-3 times a day for five days.

Who is forbidden to postural drainage of the bronchi?

The procedure is simple and available for home use, but it has a number of contraindications. It is dangerous to perform the procedure for people with heart disease, hypertension and brain pathologies. It is forbidden in the acute phase of pneumonia, when a high temperature is observed. Do not appoint for pulmonary hemorrhage, spinal cord injuries, ribs and damage to connective tissue.

In conclusion, I want to emphasize that postural drainage reduces the severity of the course of the disease, contributes to the fastest recovery and rehabilitation after the diseases.
