Panteleimon the Healer. Icon and manifestation of its therapeutic effect

In churches there are images of saints, to whom gold ornaments have been donated: rings, earrings. To grant the salvation of life or help seriously ill people is capable of Panteleimon the healer. The icon shows him a beautiful young man. A brief history of his life, the ability to heal people and help modern believers in prayers - all of this will be told in the publication.

What life did St. Panteleimon the healer live ?

The icon of this Great Martyr is today most revered among Russian believers for her amazing abilities to treat people. Panteleimon is depicted as a young man with a feather (a liar) in one hand and a casket with medicines in the other. But what was his fate?

The Great Martyr named Pantoleon was born in the northwest of Asia Minor, in the city of Nicomedia. Now this place belongs to Turkey, called the city - Ismid. His mother was a Christian, and her father a pagan. After receiving the basic education, the young man learned the healing abilities of Efrosin, who treated the emperor.

According to God's will Pantoleon met with the preacher Yermolai, who taught him faith in God. The boy carefully studied everything he knew, marveling at the Savior's ability to heal and resurrect the sick. Once Pantoleon himself was convinced of such a miracle: by appealing to Christ he was able to revive the child, which was bitten by a snake. From that moment on, the future Great Martyr was christened by Ermolai under the name of Panteleimon (the correct stress on "le"), which in Greek means "all-merciful", "the doctor from God." Since then, the merciful young man has asked for help from the Heavenly Powers to heal the people who addressed him. He helped each of them, leading them to faith. One day Panteleimon helped a blind man who had lost hope of seeing the light. When the ability to see him returned, this event became one of the greatest miracles.

Once the doctors, who did not recognize faith in Christ, reported to the emperor on Panteleimon, demanding reprisals for his confession of God. When the young healer was brought to Maximilian, he reported that he was healing in the name of Jesus, and asked him to give him the opportunity to prove it. The palace was led to a paralyzed, weakened man, who suffered from his fate for many years. No matter how hard the pagans tried to put him on their feet, everything was useless. When Panteleimon approached the sufferer and read the prayers, he easily got to his feet and felt fine. He gained faith in God and began to praise Jesus Christ, who healed him. However, this course of events did not suit the emperor-pagan, who immediately ordered the execution of the healed, and Panteleimon sentenced to serious tortures, forcing him to abandon God.

The young man did not do this. There were real miracles: all the tools that touched his body became completely harmless, broke down, lost stiffness! The healer was trying to burn candles, but as soon as they approached him, the flame was extinguished. Then he was thrown into a pack of lions, but they began to lick his legs. All the same, Maximilian decided to execute the young man by cutting off his head outside the city, under a withered tree.

When the executioners were about to execute the order, their weapons became soft. They believed in God and asked for forgiveness from Panteleimon. However, the young man ordered them to fulfill what the emperor had ordered. When everything happened, the unexpected happened: the blood turned to milk, and the dried olive tree became covered with fruits.

Icon of Panteleimon the Healer. Value in modern life

The image of this good young man-healer in churches is covered with a large number of believers. People who have lost hope of saving their loved ones turn to him. They ask for help with discomforts, illnesses, because Panteleimon devoted his short life to the unhappy, suffering from the disease. There were many cases when a merciful saint sent from heaven his help to all who sincerely asked him about it. In gratitude believers leave precious things at the image of the Great Martyr, make donations to the temple. For this reason Panteleimon the healer - the icon is considered miraculous.

Today, at the time of Baptism, when the sacrament of the Unction and consecration of the water is performed, the prayers turn to this merciful young man. He is called and in prayer for the sick people. Celebrating the day of this saint is customary to perform a new style on August 9 (old - July 27).

Panteleimon the healer - an icon that carries two meanings

Panteleimon - so began to call the young man, when he became a real healer. In Western countries, he is considered the patron of all doctors. However, the name that the young man wore before his baptism - Pantoleon, was not forgotten in the Orthodox Church. It is translated as a "lion in everything". Therefore, they believe that Panteleimon the healer is the icon of the patron saint of warriors, a formidable saint. There is a close relationship between them: the warriors are most often wounded, and they need treatment most of all.
