Optimize access to files and folders. How to do defragmentation.

Devices for recording information need so-called optimization. First of all, it concerns the computer hard drive, which can contain a huge amount of content. In windows xp, the optimization procedure for the hard drive is based on 3 whales: dma mode activation, disk write caching and defragmentation.

If the first two parameters are already configured in the system by default, then the last one always raises the question of how to do the defragmentation. Because it requires periodic intervention by the user.

What is defragmentation. Process description

Before considering how to do the defragmentation, we describe the process itself of this procedure. Then we'll look at the built-in xp utilities and the auslogics software suite, which also has a separate defragmenter application.

So, the above procedure has the following features. When the user runs the program to defragment the disk, it assumes the result - speeding up the work with the computer and running daily tasks.

On the hard disk, data in small portions are recorded by sector. A file or a folder with files entirely fits within one sector. But over time, with the constant addition of new content to the HDD, these same objects are shifted relative to the primary position in such a way that one part of the file or folder can be in the initial sector, and the remaining parts in other non-contiguous sectors. There are scattered fragments of content, access to which takes more time than usual.

Thus, to accelerate the reading of data from the disk and, therefore, to reduce the time of opening the application or document, you need to combine these fragments. How to make disk defragmentation, we now look at the example of the regular utility windows xp - program defrag.exe

This utility has a graphical interface, and you can call it through the working system management console - MMC. There are two ways to start this console.

  1. In the "Start" menu, open the "execute" item, then enter mmc in the command window, but I recommend doing more wisely.
  2. Namely: right-click (touchpad) on the computer icon and select the option "computer management" in the drop-down list .
  3. The control console windows opens, divided into two parts. In the one that is smaller and located to the left, we will finally see how to do the defragmentation.
  4. We select the item "disk defragmentation" and click on it. A window opens in which you can perform this procedure on specific partitions of the hard disk.
  5. Suppose we need to find out if there are additional fragments on the system partition C. Select the icon of this section by clicking the mouse and press "disk analysis". The program will analyze the current state of the partition and display a detailed summary of whether you need the defragmentation for the selected volume.
  6. If the disk needs processing, press the "defragmentation" button and wait for the result. After completing the procedure, the application will display a report on the work performed. If some files can not be optimized, there may not be enough free space on the partition. Then, before you do the defragmentation, free up additional space, and then try again.

Use to optimize auslogics 5

The above set of programs is designed to optimize windows. Also, the auslogics series 5 includes a defragmenter. Here's how to do a defragmentation with it (it is assumed that this set is already installed):

  1. Run the application using the shortcut on the desktop windows.
  2. Click on the icon in the form of a blue ball in the tray (near the clock).
  3. Right-click on the list of submenus "Tools" - "disk maintenance / defragmentation".
  4. In the opened window of the program, analyze or defragment the partitions. The utility from auslogics has advanced capabilities, when compared with the built-in optimizer. Otherwise, its functionality is similar to the interface defrag.exe
